So our two goals we ’scored‘ – one was dubious penalty and the other an own goal? We didn’t score from play, Czechia were much better, im glad our false hope got quashed early tbh.
North Macedonia were robbed.
No. The team was very poor and passive in the second half and IMHO, the penalty for Ireland’s first goal shouldn’t have been given… add to that a silly penalty given away.
Who was letting the fire brigade run their sirens while we took the penalties?
The jerkers have our number.
If you’ve got a keeper who will probably save one penalty the rest of the team needs to take advantage of that probability.
Penalties are what often separates the best from the rest.
We had the chances to win but as soon as we got the second, we stopped playing. They were the better team on the night and Denmark would destroy us if we played like that. Yeah the peno was stupid but it wasn’t all on him
There was a massive drop off in the second half. So a goal was always coming from Czechia at some point.
Giving away a silly penalty didn’t help either. Then finally a penalty shootout is always a coin flip.
The only upside it is the most attractive style of football Ireland has played in years.
I still have PTSD from Trapattoni.
Had enough chances to win it, and Czechia were really wasteful with the ball, but unfortunately we reverted to type under sufficient pressure.
Neither team can beat Denmark after that 120 minute slog last night though, so I think the penalties winner is pretty much moot.
No. It was a fair result between two very evenly matched teams. If they’d have lost on penos it would have been harsh on them, especially after recovering a two goal deficit. However, it was there for the taking for us and only an absolutely brain dead tug in the box allowed them any foothold. We get to the half and we go on and win it.
Should? No. Threw it away? Yes, sadly. Schoolboy errors leading to two goals. One of the best penalty keepers in the world right now couldn’t redeem two poor penalties saved. Sadly the lack of depth caught up to us.
Great run all the same, pity to miss out on the craic of group stages.
You could ask if we even deserved to be 2-0 up, but that’s beside the point, we were and lost it.
We were holding on in the second half but we were unlucky not to win, hit the woodwork three or four times, lost Sammy Szmodics to concussion after we brought him on to take a penalty.
Should we have won? On the basis of how we played, yes, we had a 2 goal lead. To the saps whining about how those goals were scored, watch football rathar than comment for negatively sake; any team will take a goal however they come. Tu our don’t get penalties nu less yoireu in the opposition box, same with the OG, we won the corner and fought for the goal.
That said, throwing away a 2 goal lead is piss poor.
No need to have given the penalty up their end. We aren’t drilled enough to know how to calm the game down and frustrate the opposing team, probably because we’re never in a commanding position.
We played a poor campaign and letsy be honest, we got pulled along for the ride believing after two genuine good games, that we had a chance of qualifying.
You can’t built a team around one decent goalscorer though.
The Czechs were awful much worse than I expected and the diving was another level. Disgraceful. On that basis alone we deserved to go through. They were definitely there for the taking. If we got to half time at two nil probably win
They were shite and we were 2-0 up after 20ish minutes…
So yeah I feel like we should have won, but we did what we always do when we get an early lead. Sit back, absorb pressure and get stung late. Born in 1989 and my entire childhood seems to be littered with goals against us like that in qualifiers! Looking at you Macedonia!
We threw that away massively.
Wouldn’t have beat Denmark though
Manning’s moment of madness cracked the door open…the kind of lapse you’d expect in a schoolboy cup tie, not at this level. With just a goal in it you are always open to heartbreak.
Truthfully, the Czechs offered very little on the night. They were poor , uninspired, and never looked like breaking us down in open play. It always felt as though, if they were to find a way through, it would come from a set piece. That wee shite bag of a linesman gave me bad jue jue and I knew something bad was going to happen .. cue a ball into the box for a free kick (needless foul) big man puts it in the net with 5 min to go.
By extra time, we looked spent. Legs were gone, energy drained, and the game drifted toward penalties with a sense of reluctant acceptance. I thought we should have pushed for a goal because Czech were so poor.
Even then, there was hope. The first penalty save should have been the turning point the moment that tilted everything in our favour. Instead, within seconds, it all unravelled into a nightmare.
And then came the decision that left many bewildered: why was Browne stepping up? The memory of a crucial miss against Slovakia still lingered, and you couldn’t ignore the sinking feeling as he approached the spot. I said it to my partner before he took it “ We are cooked .. Riona ( my mother ) would be better off taking it )
In the end, that’s the hardest truth to accept. This wasn’t a case of being outplayed or undone by brilliance. It was self-inflicted. A World Cup place would have meant more than just football , it would have lifted spirits, boosted the economy, and created memories that would last a lifetime .. devastating.
Instead, it slipped away. Not because they were better, but because, ultimately, we beat ourselves
Without a doubt. Threw it away
No. Completely flat 2nd half and gave away a stupid penalty
We played an awful second half but what ultimately cost us was that stupid penalty given away in the first. Absolutely no need for it like, beyond frustrating
The first 30mins / first half we really looked like we had it in us, started great, had all the possession and Czechia hadn’t settled. But after that they grew into the game and were arguably better across the rest of the match, a few patches aside. Their bench seems to play a big part.
Hitting the crossbar, the post, Parrot’s header….we definitely had enough chances to win it, and probably had better chances at goal than the Czechs. So when you miss those & don’t capitalise on them missing the first penalty, you’ve lost the defining moments. Element of hindsight and that, bitter pill to swallow but we needed to kill that game at 2-0.
Denmark team look good on paper, didn’t see any of it but a 4-0 win for them at home is a much easier tune-up for the next game – as it hit penalties I found it hard to imagine either Ireland or Czechia pitching up against Denmark only a few days later after penalties, 120 mins and all emotion in that game.
Unfortunately we just don’t seem to have a midfielder that can calm things down and take the sting out of a game. The Czechs were going Gung ho in the second half and it was really frantic.
A midfielder with a little composure to just put his foot on the ball and keep things simple is exactly what was needed then, far too often the players were just treating the ball like a grenade and needlessly booting it in hope up the field
They were the better team, the first penalty was soft our second was an OG. So No.
Yes but we deserved to lose v Hungary
Not at all. Two awful teams.
the way Ireland were on top in the first half was passionate, chaotic, and got two lucky goals. the way the Czechs got on top in the second half was v controlled and we could not get the ball off them. they were not brilliant but they were better organised. I don’t think it was an unfair result tbh
Didn’t deserve to win it.
Seemed to be no game plan for going two up.
Should have made changes at 60 minutes to fide the wave of attacks.
Like, you’re 2-1 up, under fierce pressure and you’re playing it short??
They’re a poor team let’s face it, rode their luck. The quality isn’t there.
The attitude of Irush media snd fans was incredible, RTE Radio literally had a 15 minute section at 7pm saying they’re on a good run??? A good run? Delusional.
Whoever got through where get battered by Denmark regardless of being on home turf!
Christ no.
We had an excellent chance being 2-0 up but threw it away.
Czechia weren’t great either. Denmark will beat them I’m sure.
What kind of bot question is this
No, we didn’t deserve it. A soft penalty given in our favour and an OG. Then we gave away a stupid penalty. The best team won, though that’s not saying much.
Yes we should have won it, but a bit of inexperience and a few moments of madness cost us.
Czechia were really poor, created very little but we give them a really needless penalty and the goal was probably coming in the second half. We had chances to kill the game, the shot that hit the post, a few other half moments.
Penalties is always going to be a lottery, and we just lacked quality there too.
But a decent effort and they’ve at least given us a bit of hope
No. We had a penalty and an own goal and we blew it.
I’ll support the team until there’s breath in my lungs but we aren’t that good at the moment.
No blame, no finger pointing. We just don’t have that good of a team but all of that team tried their best.
It is what it is. I’m proud of them and optimistic for the young lads coming through with our young(ish) established players.
The Czechia lads got it done, fair play to them. We had plenty of time to figure it out and win but didn’t.
Two minutes of injury time to go and the Irish left back passes to the center back. The center back passes back to the left back who passes back to the center back again. What was all that about?
There was a moment in the 2nd half where Ireland were on the counter attack, 4 Irish on 3 Czechs but Browne couldn’t control the ball despite a clean pass to him and he lost possession before that break got going. At that moment I knew we didn’t deserve it.
Browne was woeful overall, even without the penalty miss.
This is our best campaign since the 2018 WC qualifying campaign. Yes we had a stinker or two but at the end of the day we made a playoff & put it to a higher ranked side with a very strong home record.
Losing on penalties proves we were equally matched, and considering our squad is younger than theirs + had over a dozen internationals missing (think Ferguson, Cullen, Johnston etc..) & a heap more barely playing at club level (think Coleman, Ogbene, Brady etc..) I think this campaign showed we are on the up.
2028 & 2030 will be massive, our odds of qualifying for 2028 are massive, and hopefully we can take that momentum into 2030. Heimir’s focus will now turn to squad depth building, starting on Tuesday & continuing in May.
I haven’t been this excited for our national team since 2016, onwards we go.
Czechia produced stronger chances I. Front of goal? I remember only 1 good chance and one half chance by them. We had about the same but also hit the woodwork twice.
Soucek was the game changer though. Just gave them an energy they were lacking in the first half
Typical. We deserved to win it. Should never have given the penalty away to let them back in it that was the killer. It was so fucking stupid but typical from us.
I think 25ish minutes in is probably the most confident I have ever been during an Irish match in recent times…
They were playing well and Czechia looked utterly rattled and shook. A killer that they got their first goal so quickly, think if we’d settled at 2-0 for a few minutes could have taken complete control of the game and not sure they had it in them to score 2 from play.
Yes. 2/0 up and blew it.
Second half was meh but I was quite happy with how we played in ET. Even going out I much prefer how we played so far in 2026 than some of the atrocious stuff from last year
From 2-0 up we should have easily won that game. We were in control.
Look we where crap and I’m all for an losing honestly but some things didn’t look right. The clean out of szmodic. No attempt to go for the ball, no booking. 25 fouls and 1 card on the 91st for Czech. 14 fouls 2 cards for Ireland. The Brady foul that led to the goal, was it? I didn’t see any replay and the penaltys, that was just pathetic.

Should have won when 2-0 up, but fucked it within minutes with a stupid penalty
They were there for the taking last night so yes, we should have won BUT I had a feeling before the match that we had notions. Portugal and Hungary were incredible results but the months before that give reason for caution. We are lucky that Kelleher is now playing fulltime, his reaction times have much improved and he is showing he is the class Keeper he appeared to be and Troy Parrot is on the roll of a lifetime.
People are being hard on Manning but I am hopeful for him. Some of his play last night going forward was excellent. He may also rival Brady for crossing the ball which is great since Brady will likely bow out soon.
Ogbene could be the heart and soul of the team. The man works his socks off.
Collins and O’Shea played well but being undone near post isn’t great. At the same time, we were exposed by dropping off too much, imo.
I think we need to be realistic going forward. People didn’t like O’Neil’s brand of football and wanted him gone but we won matches. People didn’t like Kenny’s teams not winning despite them trying to play a nicer brand of football. Heimir seems to be finding a middle ground and while Heimir seems nice, tactically he is unimpressive. I think Parrot in particular finding form during his spell has flattered to deceive. We can’t depend on one player. We invited so much pressure leading up to their goal. You can’t try to sit back for 25 minutes with a 1 goal lead.
Shot at hit the post ,would off put 3-1 -that was the killer moment for me
An idiotic penalty cost us the game.
We were appalling in the second half. They’re not a good side, if we can’t beat them from 2-0 up then we’re not a good enough team to be in the World Cup. Pains me to say that but it’s the truth.
