I struggle to understand why Austria is so much richer than Portugal

Austria was for decades, like Portugal, on the edge of capitalist Europe and has in other ways no advantages over Portugal

Greece in the early 2000s had kind of established itself as a western country and a regional power in south Eastern Europe. Our nominal gdp was higher than all the Balkan countries combined. After the debt crisis our living standards fell to Eastern European ones! Such a tragedy. We’re the only country of the former western bloc to witness such decadence.

I’m pleasantly surprised by Lithuania. I always thought the best „pupils in the class“ were the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia. So now it’s Lithuania instead of Estonia?

  4. Greece is such a tragedy (Pun intended). Whilst we have overcome the debt crisis of 2010, the country hasnt developed any mechanisms to be ran as a modern developed country.

A lot of public infrastructure is falling apart and there are still a lot of apartments / building blocks that essentially do not have heating still (Athens). Even our train system has completely fallen apart, after the Tempi tragedy and the catastrophic rainfalls the previous years.

We aren’t optimistic here for the future.

  5. Woah Chechia is already starting to surpass France/Spain/Italy that is insane.

  6. Bulgaria is so close of getting rid of in every article „poorest EU member“ moniker. I bet they won’t call Greece that when it finally happens.

That’s not GDP Per Capita. That’s PPP GDP Per Capita, a.k.a. Total Bullshit. PPP metrics are utterly worthless, doubly so if you try applying them to GDP.

The cultural split is crazy honestly: Germanic Europe absolutely dominating, Southern Europe lagging behind, but still ok, and then Eastern Europe…

Comparing GDP in PPP does not make much sense to me when comparing countries. For example USA vs China. China PPP GDP is approx 30 % higher, but in nominal USA is approx 50 % higher. Lets assume for a year everything that is produced in USA is shipped to China and what is produced in China is shipped to USA. What will be the result? USA export will be 50 % higher. So in this case 50 % of what USA produces will be exchanged for China goods/services/others, but remaining 50 % will be exported somewhere else. PPP is good for comparing salaries in country X you can buy this amount of goods in country Y you can buy that amount.
