The root of the issue lies not in gulf states themselves, but US strategic positioning across the region after the war. Will it be a settlement in favour of US or Iran, will there be a settlement at all if the political cost is too high for either party, will the 5th fleet head quarter return to Qatar, will US take the opportunity to pivoted away from ME as the administration’s public campaign been preparing the ground work for. The gulf states are passengers once the shooting started, any back channel or soft power it once enjoyed takes a back seat and waits for the belligerents to signal willingness to return to the table. The questions this article raised are relevant and important in their own right, but they could all be overshadow by the way this war ends.
