Why is Greece’s population so much less than Turkey’s?
I know Turkey is 780k whereas Greece is 140k but the ratio is still much higher though.

Population changes across Greece over the last decade are quite revealing.

It is very interesting that the European part of Turkey alone has a larger population than the whole of Greece.

I expected Attica to be the only positive region.
Anyone care to explain why there’s growth on Crete and in the Sporades?

I will drop here an interesting idea since many folks compare Greece population to Turkey.
The more secular and modern families of Turkey has a negative grow rate. I almost had no friends who had more than one sibling. As a matter of fact most of my friends were the only kids of their families.
However, when I was in the army (it used to be mandatory for at least 5 months), I was literally the only person graduated from a university in my dormitory and squad. All folks, turkish or kurdish, had many siblings.
It is definitely can’t be the only reason but one of the main reason Turkey continued growing its population is because of conservative and more “feudal” cities.
Especially Western and coastal Turkey didn’t grow much but had a lot of internal immigrants from inland Anatolia and Kurdish populated areas.
If Turkey could educate and industrialize all ita cities, especially the lands in middle east, its population would be well below today’s range, in a same trend with Greece.
Just my two cents, I am pretty sure there are articles supported by statistics.

Greeks gotta step up the their birth rate or in a couple of decades Turkey, Albania and maybe even Israel now may lay claim to old regions and force migration there to slowly separate!

What’s the reason for Macedonia’s such a decrease? I guess that Thessaloniki alone as city has an increase, but this high drop in whole region surprised me. I know that Halkidiki isn’t top notch destination for tourism, but it’s still on sea and probably has more opportunities than some random continental region.
Situation looks similar as in Serbia. Only Beograd and Novi Sad generated some growth + Novi Pazar which has Muslim majority.

I don’t know why compare Turkey and Greece. Turkey is Muslim country, where religion is attached to country and culture.
And maybe even bigger reason is Kurdish minority with some crazy fertility.

Greece hasn’t had a positive birth rate since the early 80s. I wonder what happened that caused it to drop so suddenly
