  1. Asking and framing the wrong question:

    * Current lifestyle overshoot = x7 Japans required or maximum 20 million Japanese population.

    * More sustainably living eg lower inputs, less energy, more efficient, greener energy, change in lifestyles = 45 million population

    * Add in major national restructuring and technology shifts and innovations = 70 million

    * Then add in imports as well ie not fully self suffiient archipelago = 100 million?

    Population decline is in fact a massive necessity naturally trending demographic change back to these sustainable numbers but a lot of macro policy change is required.

    All developed nations face these sorts of numbers changes requirements, especially with climate change.

    No one wants to get their hands dirty. There is empty farm land all over the country. That is why they will never be self-sufficent.

  3. They could grow more nutritious foods (like peanuts) that don’t require special land and can be stored easily. Sure, rice is part of their culture, but so is ritual suicide.
