If Carney wants to throw human rights, democracy, and international laws under the bus when signing trade deals with authoritarian countries like China, India & Qatar he should just say so. A mere plurality of Canadians may even agree with him/approve it.

But what he can’t continue doing, is telling Canadians publically that his government takes these issues seriously while completely ignoring them behind closed doors and at the negotiating tables.

He should have more respect for Canadians.

I’d also liked for him, Trudeau, Harper, etc to answer those same questions when they’re dealing with countries like the US who have also ignored human rights for their entire history.

Seems the PMO is now saying the Privy Council Office made a mistake and Carney did in fact bring these issues up in Beijing. I would certainly hope so.

    4. Harper didn’t either and got a, albeit questionable, trade deal.

Trudeau however was proactive and was laughed out of the country.

      Take that as you will

    5. Good, this moral grandstanding is completely unhelpful and useless, given that it has no effect on how these countries behave. Trudeau loved this type of stuff, and look where it ended up, with us stuck in some pointless hostage diplomacy standoff.

Yes, because criticizing world powers for their human rights abuses will definitely work and not have any consequences for us.

Well do you wanna be dependant on America or not? Keep in mind they are have a track record of human rights abuses. This is trade and we aren’t in a position to be picky

    8. We can worry about this once we have the power to back up our statements or at least be taken seriously. You can’t build anything if you don’t have the power to build anything.
