      And this is why Jacques comments were so poisonous.  The moment he did that, the office became unavoidably politicized.  Liberals viewed him as stepping outside his role and so would be dismissive of anything the office produced while he was leading it, Tories viewed him as some paragon for telling Truth to Power and viewed anyone else the LPC nominated as inherently suspect 

      This is why somebody like the PBO *needs* to be as neutral, measured, and – frankly – boring as possible.  The need to do everything in their power to avoid putting the PBO in no-win situations like this

    2. This whole process is wrong.  Politicians cannot be trusted to pick and choose the watchdogs that are meant to watch over them, for reasons that should be too obvious to explain.

      Have the civil service produce a slate of qualified candidates, let MPs veto anyone they think isn’t impartial, then choose by lot from those remaining.
