But how do we charge said battery system when the grid is at it’s limit?
Alberta almost had a grid outage last summer during a week of cloudy and windless weather. On-demand backups are needed, but they can be hydro, nuclear, or tidal.

So to summarize and add some context the NS government wants
*Kelly said the minister concluded it did not meet N.B. Power’s need to provide backup capacity on the “coldest days when we don’t have wind” for periods of up to three days.*
Peak demand so far in NS is 2,481 megawatts
They are figuring they are going to have a 400 megawatt shortfall by 2027
The NG plant will provide 500 megawatts for 3.5 billion which is over 25 years and includes the fuel
Battery storage isn’t generation, battery storage is for when the Peak generation curve doesn’t match up with the Peak consumption consumption curves. This company knows this, they’re just trying to make some headlines and attract a project

The gas plant can charge the batteries…..

Could battery storage facilities be built underground? Or would that be cost prohibitive?

I wonder what the life of the batteries is. I know the average life of batteries for residential solar is 10-15 years for Li-ion. It would probably be very costly to replace this battery system so often.

I’m a big proponent of renewables.

The company claims they could for that same price build a 400 megawatt battery storage which would last 16-20 hours
Other experts disagree and also cite reliability and what happens when it gets cold

For some perspective the Oneida Energy Storage Project cost 700 million for 250 megawatts for 4 hours
