The American education system has a lot to answer for

It’s the certainty that always gets me: I do sometimes think we could do with more assertiveness and confidence in ourselves as a nation – but Americans have this loud and sometimes vulgar assuredness in their own opinions that can be too much.
Now having watched that, goto r/ShitAmericansSay to really get a double-hit of remarkable confident ignorance. Bet there were some doozies around Paddy’s Day.

They’re young and having a good time on Paddy’s Day even if some of them know SFA about Ireland. Let them at it, I say.

I suppose no Irish person ever went to Mardis Gras and had a wild time then?
Honestly lads, as daft as some of them are, paddy’s day is a good ’soft power‘ asset to have for a nation that has few other strings to pull.ย
It’s harmless fun and they’re mostly drunk anyways and just out for the parade. These aren’t plastic paddies genuinely wanting to be considered Irish or have some authority. They’re attending a local parade and appear to be mostly college aged kids out having a bit of craic.ย
We should be more concerned with the foreign politicians who weaponise Irishness and Irish history to push agendas in Ireland. Or those who stringently gatekeep Irishness along racial or ‚bloodline‘ ideologies ๐คฎ

Ridiculous but I would say it shows the level of generational trauma where a lot of Irish immigrants never talked about the past. I know I didnโt get even scant details about my Irish ancestors.
Itโs common for Americans to not know anything about their family history – itโs why dna testing became so popular.
Some real idiots in the mix tho.

We would do well to remember that St Patrick’s Day parades are a tradition started by (Irish) Americans.ย

Pissed out of their heads. Talking absolute shite. Screaming and shouting, but also smiles all around.
Honestly: looks like a good time. Haha

I think it’s just a bit of harmless fun, as long as they don’t start claiming to be voices on Irish domestic affairs
