the coolest part of being a cartographer: being commissioned by a local museum to design a beautiful, giant, 3-meter-tall backlit map to lure people passing and make them go inside
The museum is located in Brest, France and its name is ‚70.8‘ and is dedicated to the ocean (if you haven’t been there yet, go check it out—it’s really great) so obviously the map HAD to feature the Spilhaus projection, a 1942 map projection made to showcase the World’s oceans in one single continuous entity, helping visualise its physical and chemical dynamics.
A few word about the museum: it focuses on the sea from the perspectives of technological innovation and oceanography, lots of interactive things to check out and stuff to learn. if you visit France, you should go to Brest, definitely, and most importantly see 70.8 and its ‚bigger brother‘: Océanopolis
