Trump said there is zero chance of a trade deal without tarrifs… What is this guy doing?

He expects trump to agree to the plan; but what about trump 2 weeks from now? Or trump when an American car company calls him up?

I don’t think we should try to tie our economy and future to the US. They have proven that they are unreliable and dangerous. The systems and structures that let Trump thrive won’t disappear when he’s gone
Far better to diversify our partnerships and relationships and industries. We already pour billions into auto subsidies. That money should be used to retrain auto workers and build infrastructure for new industries, less dependent on US corporations
PP’s plan wouldn’t save us. It would make us more of a vassal state

Tariff free access isn’t going to happen. When it doesn’t, he will blame Carney instead of Trump or himself. Mark my word.

Why does Poilievre think Canada needs a new deal with the US? If the administration cannot honour existing deals, why trust them to honour a new deal? This deal seems to largely require Canadians give up front for the promise of future benefits while also taking a step back on innovation and progress.
**US Auto Manufacturers would get**
* Duty free access to the Canadian market equal to the number of cars built in Canada.
* No GST on the sale of their vehicles made in Canada.
* Reduction in tailpipe emission laws equal to those of the US saving them money.
* Access to lower cost labour and overall manufacturing *they already have access to*.
* [confidential incentives]
**Canadians would ‚get’**
* Increased air pollution causing lung diseases and healthcare costs.
* Loss of the EV credit / subsidy.
* Potentially new auto-sector jobs over the next decade.
* No GST on Canadian-made vehicles *(GST will come from somewhere else then?)*

His plan ignores reality.
And the reality is,
Trump has repeatedly said tariffs are the deal.
Trump has repeatedly said he wants all manufacturing reshored to the United States
Trump has repeatedly said he wants to crush our economy.
The Americans cannot be negotiated with.
Pierre will continue to lose support until party insiders decide to cut their losses.

So PP has a plan that will tariff China and somehow that will give Canada leverage negotiating with the US? How? Not to mention Canada already matched the US with tariffs during The end of the Biden administration and was still in place until a month ago.

This is the time to set us up for long term success and not continue the cycle of relying on the US for an overwhelming majority of our trade.
Yes, right now almost everything we build is bought domestically or sold in the US. But rather than embrace that we should work to change that. And it’ll have short/medium term pain, but be much more beneficial long term.
Nobody should be giving any credit to a plan that tries to get Trump (or the US more generally) to go back to how things were. Rather the plan should be how we move forward with this new reality.
Too many people think Trump is the problem. And he is. But he’s really representing a much bigger issue. The US does not need us and many politicians (currently Republicans but many Democrats too) will throw us under the bus if it’s what they think is best for them (and maybe their country).
No country should be as reliant as we are on the US. And we should pay the economic price for having a more diversified economy and less reliance on the US.

Could someone clarify a point on this plan. My understanding is for every car produced here the US can sell a car here for free. Canada’s population is smaller than the US. For Trump he has claimed to his people he wants to bring all jobs here. Why would he agree to this plan? He believes he a destroy our auto sector and then we’d purchase from them anyhow. So how would Trump see this as a win? From the Canadian side, other than some specific cars, why would we want to buy American cars especially if some could be produced here in Canada (aka why ship to the US instead of making and selling it here?). The only thing I can see is that the US manufacturers “build” some elements in Canada but then finalize it in the US and the sell it to Canadians as a premium end product. What am I missing on this deal?

You mean all we ever had to do to secure free trade was make a declarative statement? Why didn’t Carney think of that? s/

Of course NO one actually read the article on this sub. Typical Reddit.
People should look at the plan…..and realize it is actually stupid. The math doesn’t math.
Key details:
-said his plan would increase production in the USA from 11million cars to 13
-increase Canada production by 800k
Problem is: Canada only bought 1.9 million cars last year. Where is that 2.8 million car increase in production going to go? Canada “aligning tariffs” with the USA will do nothing for our car buying habits. If he thinks Trump will tariff away buying habits for the American market he is a goof to think USA would care about our market. Trump’s tariffs are stupid to begin with, thinks companies will close their own production facilities, open them in USA and then export them back to their home country? That’s literally what they sold the American people on what tariffs will do.
If the plan actually worked the way he wanted it to it would lead to a massive decrease in the car brands available and a massive increase to car prices. End all EV availability. Basically shutting down the USA/Canada market to any imports.

The US administration loves tariffs and has made it clear that any country it does a trade deal with is going to have to pay some sort of tariff as part of the agreement. He’s being unbelievably naive to think he’d somehow make Canada exempt from that.
