  1. From Christina Wyman, an author and teacher living in Michigan:

This week, in an episode of the podcast “[On Purpose with Jay Shetty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRohwGHFMmI),” Duff shared sentiments that would resonate with all adult children estranged from a parent: “It’s devastating. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you want your parents to feel like they care about you.”

I am well acquainted with complicated family dynamics. My mother and I haven’t breathed a word to each other in more than seven years.

And I agree with Duff. A desire for a parent’s unconditional love — to believe, at your core, that they are and always will be your safe place — does not have an age limit. Therapy taught me that this desire is hard-wired, as much a part of a person as their DNA.

I am 45 years old and, even today, after multiple birthdays, holidays and other milestones that passed without acknowledgement from my mother, I still wonder how a parent can abandon their child, whether age 4 or 40. That question is unanswerable, as far as I can tell. Judging by her latest music, Duff doesn’t seem to have solved the puzzle either.

  2. honestly so glad to see this topic in mainstream music. family estrangement is way more common than people think and we need to stop acting like everyone has to stay connected to toxic relatives just bc they’re „family.

  3. plausibleturtle on

Just this week, I was asked about my estranged sister for the first time in probably 5 years. We used to work together and I ran into one of our old co-workers while on my daily quests.

I used to kind of stumble through it, but I just said, „oh, we don’t talk. How’s xyz though?“ Thanks, Hilary Duff! 😅

  4. Family estrangement can be such a relief. Only one of our family members is really a problem, but placing distance between them and their flying monkeys has been the best thing for us. They couldn’t stand happiness, so removing them from our lives makes all the good things possible again.
