I405CA on
The vast majority of the public believes that voter ID is a common sense requirement.
The GOP knows that it won’t pass. But they want to use the Dems‘ refusal to justify Republican claims that Dems want fraud.
What Dems should do is propose adding provisions that the GOP will hate.
Require that the government issue free passports on demand to everyone. That should include providing the photos at no charge.
State and local government should be required to provide all of the supporting paperwork at no charge to the citizen. The feds will need to pay for them.
Transportation should be provided to those who need the help.
And so on.
The Republicans will balk at all of that. The Dems can then attack the GOP for its lack of common sense.
Show what it costs to get the ID, and call it the Trump Voting Tax. That’s on top of all of the other Trump taxes that we’re being hit with. Now would be a good time to talk about Trump’s Iran gas tax on top of the Trump Voting Tax.

For all the Chuds insisting that most Americans „agree“ with the SAVE act:
>After thanking Cornyn for his question, Durbin explained that the voter ID requirements of the bill are not satisfied by a driver’s license, but only a passport. “Fifty percent of Americans do not have a passport. Those who want to obtain it so they can vote will pay $186 and wait three or four weeks for that to happen,” Durbin said. “Secondly, you can use a birth certificate, but any person who has changed their name as a result of a marriage … has to find not only their birth certificate, but some correction of it to prove that they are eligible to register to vote.
I guarantee most Americans do not know these details about this fascist attempt to disenfranchise voters.
Cactusfan86 on
The most hilarious thing about the whole bill is I truly think it will hurt republicans more than democrats. Educated people, immigrants, urban residents-all more likely to have a passport than Jethro and his wife in rural North Carolina
WaterFriendsIV on
You have to explain it in a way that affects them. Tell him many YOUNG, liberal women voters don’t change their last names when, or if, they get legally married because it’s „woke“ to keep your own name. They probably won’t have any trouble voting. But many, if not most, of the OLDER women voters have taken their husband’s last names because they’re more traditionally „conservative“. Those older voters might not be able to vote in the election. Ruh roh.

latchkey_adult on
The most important thing is to explain to supporters of this bill that a driver’s license will NOT be enough to satisfy the voter requirements to prove citizenship. A passport costs nearly $200 and takes a month (also it’s a hidden tax). You can use a birth certificate, but if you changed your name as a result of a marriage you need to have a birth certificate AND some correction of it to prove that you are eligible to register to vote. SHARE THIS INFO. Even Democrats who think this bill is no big deal are ignorant to the facts.

> “It’s estimated that nine percent of the voters in America do not have the identification required by this bill. It means that, ultimately, those people will not be voting. And I think that is the ultimate goal of this administration,” Durbin continued. This was news to Cornyn, who asked if these concerns could be addressed by the amendment process. Durbin responded, “When’s the last time we amended a bill?”

Am I crazy or does this not sound like it will hurt Republican voters more than Dems? The stats I remember were that ~52% of registered democrats had a passport vs ~42% of registered republicans.
Beyond the identification requirements for voter ID, the SAVE Act requires that states turn over all their voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security on an ongoing basis AND requires frequent voter roll purges.
Republicans want the freedom to unilaterally disenfranchise millions at will so they can never lose. We can’t allow that to happen.

Try just getting online access to your Social Security account. In order to validate your identity for access through [Login.gov](http://Login.gov) or [www.id.me](http://www.id.me), you need to not only upload the required valid picture ID, you need to have a cell phone, and your cell phone number needs to match one of those associated with you name in the public record. The alternative is to upload more verification documents, and then have a fairly lengthy video conference. The whole process is quite lengthy (a few hours) and could be near impossible for folks with limited technical skill.
The biggest surprise for me is that the system won’t allow you to present your documents in person at a participating US Post Office unless your cell phone number matches one with your name in the public record. The automated system also doesn’t explain why your cell phone number failed the verification test; you need to hear that from a live customer representative.

Passport has to be “valid” which means not expired. They are renewed every 10 years, $130 currently and that amount is not set in stone.
The amendment also demands in person registration and in person changes. If you move to a new house across town you must register in person again. If you are “accidentally“ purged from voter rolls you have to re register in person. The act required the federal government to receive regularly updated states voter rolls every quarter. How easy would it be to combine ALL of the data the government now has ( legally and illegally obtained) along with voter rolls including a persons voting history, use AI and analytics to purge specific people from voter rolls . A few here a bunch there, oops. No rules in place for oversight or consequences there.
No DEI so too bad for those wheelchair bound voters, voters who don’t drive, voters who can’t get to their “local”government building between 9-5 weekdays to register. Who don’t have money to get or renew their passport. To take off to go apply for their passport.
