      **In Brief:**

      * When Canadians are asked to make sacrifices, those at the top need to lead by example.
      * No one is better positioned to set that example than Governor General Mary Simon. The government just gave her an automatic raise of $15,800, so her total salary is now $393,800. For context, a family of four will spend about $17,000 on groceries this year.
      * A recent Leger poll confirms what many Canadians already know: The governor general’s salary is too high. Nearly 60% support want to cut the governor general’s pay.
      * MPs have similarly refused to cut or freeze their salaries despite polling showing that 80% of Canadians support a salary freeze for federal politicians. So far, Mike Dawson is the only one of the 343 members of the House of Commons who has said he will refuse the raise.
      * With her mandate drawing toward its conclusion, Simon has a rare chance to leave a lasting mark before the change of guard. By refusing future automatic pay increases and reviewing her premium perks, Simon could reset expectations for the office and for those who follow.
      * It would show the entire government that taking taxpayer-funded pay hikes while Canadians are struggling is wrong and that those at the top should share in the sacrifices Canadians are being asked to make.

The average Canadian can only imagine a $15k raise. If they had a choice they would never approve pay raises that high for anyone in the highest level of government when they strike down their requests for a raise.

Why do we only attack women in position of power getting raises? Especially an indigenous women. She’s got an important job in the country and should be paid well. As should literally everyone else.

This outrage should be directed at all the corporations not paying workers fairly and profiting massively.

Abolish the GG role altogether. 400k a year and a massive mansion and estate is preposterous.

They should turn the GG grounds into a permanent residence for the PM. 10 years of temporary residence while 24 Sussex sits idle is an embarrassment

Elected officals jobs should be tied to their province, they get average salary/income of the province/city.

You want more money then improve the people who voted you in.

The GG shouldnt even get a salary its a ceremonial position.

I earn around 500K and pay taxes so that GG can earn a similar amount for doing nothing. 😀

    7. In medical We’ve been getting 0.5% twice a year forever.. definetly cant keep up after a decade.

Just go ahead and publicly audit the government already. Every last dime needs to be accounted for.

I’m not upset at her pay raise. I’m upset the rest of us don’t get them as frequently.

Simple solution, all public servants get the same percentage raise as politicians.

I’ll do her job 150k per year! Common gov I got yer savings right here.

Everyone saying we’re broke but were paying this lady 400k a year and putting her up in a mansion for what amounts to a do nothing job. I understand she’s probably in meetings all day or whatever but why?? It feels like everything is just a lie and scam these days. We have a society of leeches. It happens everywhere. It feels like all the high paid positions everywhere are just middle managers sitting in meetings circle jerking all day. What the fuck do you actually provide?

    13. MinuteCampaign7843 on

She has a token position. No teeth. It’s all theatre. Her position needs to be removed or make it 100% independent so she can actually hold the party in power to account with real consequences.

    14. radbaddad23 on

Why should she give up her pay raise? I don’t see corporate types giving up theirs.

    15. JimmyTheJimJimson on

The GG is a ceremonial position and should therefore be paid as such. Nothing at all.

    16. How about you demand the minimum wage go up? You know, help everyone, instead of trying to direct anger at a few single jobs that may or may not be overpaid.

The minimum wage across Canada doesn’t cover the bare minimum needed to survive. With the cost of food and housing, minimum wage is a joke. Push for THAT!

Rabble rabble inflation, these jobs don’t deserve it or some other excuse to keep people in poverty slave wages.

    17. Refusing the pay raise is a no brainer in the current climate. Record deficits for next few years.

Taking this pay raise is nothing more than a slap to the face of citizens.

    18. TerrorizeTheJam on

I get a raise when I do a good job. Why are Canadian politicians getting a raise when they’re clearly failing us?

    19. TemporarySoftware439 on

The Toronto Sun is a low quality mouthpiece for the rich and powerful.

Pay Canadians more (especially the young) and they won’t care how much the GG makes.

    20. I’m glad she gets free housing too, hate to know how much of her salary she’d need to pay towards that to afford a place to live.

I have no issues for pay raises for MPs, Ministers and the PM. You want to get the best people and it’s not the most attractive job when truly competent people can make more money in the private sector.

The GG is not the same thing and while there should be a healthy salary for the person representing the Head of State, you don’t need to attract the absolute best and brightest. A 25% hike since 2019 seems unreasonable. If she doesn’t like her current salary she can always resign and try her luck elsewhere.
