He is of touch with reality. Ireland is already under attack by ruzzia, izrael and others. It’s political interference, social media disinformation, immigration influence, right wing issues, I.T. and undersea cable attacks etc. ruzzia has had a big part in crippling the u.s. and britain, and is openly attacking all over Europe.
Ireland is a country sandwiched between 3 nuclear powers, there is nothing we could realistically do to guarantee our security except by acquiring our own nuclear weapons. I’m not recommending we need to go down that road. Our best option is to stay neutral while appeasing these three countries which we currently are doing.

It really is astonishing that a country that suffered so long and so severely did not try to build up a strong military when it had the chance.
He is absolutely right in pretty much everything, neutrality was used as an excuse to stop spending.
He hints at something which everyone in armed forces already knows. The country we actually needs to worry about long term is the same one it’s always been. Britain.
Relying on the brits for defence and banging the neutrality drum at the same time? Biggest freeloaders in Europe, a laughable 0.25% of the GDP spent on defence? Even the Vatican spends more of their respective GDP %.

Just once I’d love to log onto this sub and not have the shortleg armchair generals screaming for us to pour money into war.
I couldn’t give a fuck about the opinion of a “retired Irish general”.
We should either choose to have an effective military capability and fund it appropriately, or just abolish it. Just wasting money half assing it, and doing a massive disservice to members of the Defense Forces.
Who is our enemy in terms of occupation, exactly? Russia is the only legitimate threat to us – yet invading Ireland would be absolutely insane, given the interminably long supply lines and the miniscule strategic value this island offers any invading force – we’re literally on the way to nowhere.
Which direction would Russia invade from? Would it direct an invading flotilla made up of the Northern fleet through Norwegian, Icelandic, Greenlandic and UK territorial waters? All of whom are NATO members? Or would it instead use the Baltic fleet to invade, sailing uninterrupted past Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the UK?
For people concerned with the sub-sea cables, yeah sure this is an issue, but the first point is that these have 2 ends. Sure, 1 end is in Ireland, but an attack on a cable going to Ireland is an attack on the country on the other end too. 6 cables connect to other countries through the Atlantic – 3 to the US, 2 to Canada and 1 to Iceland. Who’s going to attack these cables with national military infrastructure and assume that the country on the other end won’t retaliate?
I don’t know why people keep bringing up the same old speil about who would invade/attack us as a reason not to spend on our defence. Should we not be able to protect our waters, our air space? „Sure the UK does that!“…so what? This assumption that nothing will ever happen to is is so incredibly naive. And anyway, not having any threats doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a functional military that isn’t held together by duct tape and hopes and dreams.

We really should be focusing on drone and anti drone warfare first and foremost. Seems the most logical threat. The idea that we couldn’t prevent a drone going into Dublin or Shannon Airport seems like a critical issue.
Not to mention having a maritime force capable of finding and if necessary boarding vessels given the fact that qe are a bloody island.
I think if people want to be neutral then so be it the government needs to spend money to update and modernise our defence forces. They need to bite the bullet and start spending it needs to be done weather, we as citizens like it or not it’s time we started as people have said it will be at a point in the future where it will be everyone for themselves and when Putin comes knocking which he has been testing. We are fully fucked.
People questioning the Swiss neutrality as well, I put it to them are we truly neutral if or Rangers go on missions with foreign special forces as well.
