    1. It’s hard to imagine the national program could be more of a failure than the pilot program, but here we are.

$24,000 per firearm… so far. We can at least 5x that, these are rookie numbers.

      $24 000 per gun 😂😂 holy fuck,
could have bought the CAF a few more weapon systems instead of dishing out that amount of money for pink GSG-16s in .22lr 😂😂

    4. $2000 for the guns and $22000 for the administrators – sounds like every other federal project.

Some owners of super rare guns are being offered $2.00 for firearms worth four grand plus. If this truly was about public safety the government would have spared no expense paying owners for their guns like the promised during the OIC announcements but this whole thing isn’t about public safety but rather a punishment ritual for people who did nothing wrong to appease a special interest lobby group.

Never mind the cost per firearm. Mind the fact that they are $800 million and have only collected part of the business tally and the Cape Breton pilot total. That’s almost a billion before the program actually gets off the ground. By any metric, that’s terrible.

    7. Now if they offered $24,000 a gun people would probably be much more inclined to sell them back.

I didn’t have any on the list. But some friends dealing with it and my understanding from them was theirs no guarantees on payout. Seemed to be all first come first serve.

Strategy seems to just be rip everyone off and the buyback numbers are just proposed.

Carney needs to get his arms around this one. No one wants it, it doesn’t work, it costs a fortune, openly opposed by policing. Additionally it serves up ample fodder for struggling right wingers thriving on criticism and division.

Liberals the worst thing to ever happen to this once great country

I don’t like the program. But I imagine the costs will come down as more guns come in. The first gun probably worked out to much more than $24,000.

It’s called government ineffectiveness and inefficiency. I recall an econ class I took way back in the day that show how $1 of tax payer money actually resulted in $.14 after it worked its way through government bureaucracy.

I think it’s a tough pill to swallow for most Canadians that both sides of our government are terrible at their job and we’d probably be better off without either party in charge. The Ndp is also filled with morons as well.

Just stop then and review all of the ridiculous changes that have been made

For the unfamiliar, the $24,000 is not what owners get paid, but rather what it costs the government collect, destroy and *maybe* compensate the owner for a firearm.

This program clearly has its faults but the Toronto Sun should not be trusted or used as a source of information if you want to be taken seriously.

Probably doesn’t help that participation was optional for police services, so I know a ton in Ontario are opting out, which means the costs to cover this region (if they even bother) will likely be higher as they would need to establish more infrastructure for collection, etc. Or just abandon the region, defeating the purpose.
