    1. [Israel](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/http://axios.com/world/israel)’s strikes on 30 [Iranian](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://www.axios.com/world/iran) fuel depots Saturday went far beyond what the [U.S.](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://www.axios.com/2026/03/08/iran-ground-troops-special-forces-nuclear) expected when Israel notified it in advance, sparking the first significant disagreement between the allies since the war began [eight days ago](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://www.axios.com/2026/02/28/iran-attack-trump-us-israel-strikes), according to a U.S. official, Israeli official and a source with knowledge.

**Why it matters:** The [U.S.](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://www.axios.com/2026/02/28/trump-iran-war-iraq-venezuela) is concerned Israeli strikes on infrastructure that serves ordinary Iranians could backfire strategically, rallying Iranian society to support the regime and [driving up oil prices](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://www.axios.com/2026/03/08/trump-oil-prices-iran-fear-strait-hormuz).

**Driving the news:** The Israeli air force’s Saturday strikes created large fires in Tehran, igniting flames visible for miles and blanketing [the capital in heavy smoke](https://web.archive.org/web/20260308212250/https://time.com/7383099/iran-news-oil-strikes-tehran/).

      * The IDF claimed in a statement that the fuel depots „are used by the Iranian regime to supply fuel to different consumers including its military organs.“
      * An Israeli military official said the strikes were intended in part to tell Iran to stop targeting Israeli civilian infrastructure.

**Behind the scenes:** Israeli and U.S. officials said the IDF notified the U.S. military ahead of the strikes.

      * But a U.S. official said that the U.S. military was surprised by how wide-ranging they were.
      * „We don’t think it was a good idea,“ a senior U.S. official said.
      * An Israeli official said the U.S. message to Israel was „WTF“.
      * The White House and the IDF didn’t comment.

**The big picture:** While the facilities that were struck are not oil production facilities, U.S. officials are concerned the footage of burning depots could spook oil markets and push energy prices even higher.

      * „The president doesn’t like the attack. He wants to save the oil. He doesn’t want to burn it. And it reminds people of higher gas prices,“ a Trump adviser told Axios.

**The other side:** The spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters, which oversees the military operations, warned Saturday that if attacks on Iran’s oil infrastructure continue, Tehran may respond with similar strikes across the region.

      * He added that Iran so far hasn’t targeted regional fuel and energy infrastructure and threatened that if Iran does, oil prices could hit $200 a barrel.
      * Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, one of the most senior officials in the regime, warned that if attacks on infrastructure continue, Iran will retaliate „without delay.“

**What’s next:** A U.S. official says the disagreement and what the U.S. expects in the war is expected to be addressed at senior political levels between the two allies.

Killing people… no problem. Killing kids… no problem. Destroying oil – WHAT THE HELL?

    3. In my part of Canada, gas prices already shot up 30¢ a litre. The markets already don’t like this war.

I can’t wait for prices to start nearing $2/L again!!

    4. mitch-22-12 on

There is no strategy or coordination here Israel and trump are just winging it hoping the regime will eventually collapse

    5. Alive_Internet on

What a mess. This suggests that the US and Israel aren’t even coordinated in their goals or strategy.

      > srael’s strikes on 30 Iranian fuel depots Saturday went far beyond what the U.S. expected when Israel notified it in advance

Absolute horseshit. When you bomb fuel depots the damage is well known in advance.

What they’re doing here is distancing themselves from it because of the horrific imagery that’s coming out of rivers of oil on fire in drains, the sun being blocked out and the fact they exposed 17 million people to a massive toxic plume.

They know how bad it could be and did nothing to stop them.

    7. America is just worried about the price of oil because that will hurt their support at home. They don’t actually care about the rest.

Trumps goal is a quick war to make a deal and parade it for midterms. Israel’s goal is complete destruction of Iran becoming a failed state. To say they have opposing goals is an understatement

    9. The one thing Trump fears more than anything including the Epstein files is high gas prices. His base will crumble if they have to pay more at the pump.

    10. leftguard44 on

So odds Trump declares mission accomplished and fucks off out of the gulf?

    11. Historical-Pilot-784 on

Gotta love people who genuinely still believe that Americans have no agency here.

It’s just as much your war as it is Israels. Hell, USA is the king of waging war across middle east.

    12. Round_Ad_2972 on

They have different goals. Israel wants Iran to be a failed state that can never again challenge Israel. USA wants a pro USA leadership in Iran that will not become a failed state and destabilize the gulf states.

    13. Well when a country has blackmail evidence over your pedophilic leader then congratulations you get to watch and be that country’s lapdog. Now release the Epstein files.

    14. FalseZookeepergame15 on

It’s crazy how much Israel has become the monster that they feared.

    15. How can we sell this to American people, if they blow up all the oil we want to take!?!

      Trump probably

    16. Fit-Boss2261 on

It’s really sad that our government is more upset about destroying oil than killing kids. Tis is the American way

    17. Israel: Sowwweeee 👉👈

USA: Aww shucks, Israel. We all make mistakes in the heat of the moment. Here’s another couple hundred million worth of weapons. Try not to do it again, scamp!

    18. DissedFunction on

unfortunately for trump…..bibi is his daddy.

and Us taxpayers are bibi’s own private bank.

and US soldiers…well….bibi prolly cares less about them then trump and that’s not a high benchmark.

    19. Now the USA understands what it’s like to be allied with an unstable leader

    20. No, sorry. We’re not doing this. America can’t always be stumbling and fumbling their way into shit like this and not taking any accountability. Trump was very obviously favored by Israel because of his open willingness to get into exactly this situation and start this war. We voted for him anyway, twice. This is our doing.

    21. >“The president doesn’t like the attack. He wants to save the oil. He doesn’t want to burn it. And it reminds people of higher gas prices,“ a Trump adviser told Axios.

Mass grave for little girls, par for the course… Wasted oil, unacceptable, a bad look!

      Fucking hell.

    22. We’re at war with Iran because Miriam Alderson donated $250 million to Trump’s campaign. She lobbies for Israel. Quid pro quo.
