What killed comedy was streaming. Some movies would bomb in theaters, then make bank on video. But when that down the line money dried up (DVD, rental, cable, etc) the middle budget movies stopped being made.

  2. Tim Robinson does the right comedy in the Trump area. Just all our anxiety being let out.

I don’t think he’s entirely wrong. I feel a lot of political comedy is hard to sit thru just because of how absurd and ridiculous everything is.

SNL can’t do any political commentary without reddit blowing up on either how insensitive it is or how they aren’t taking Trump seriously enough and should take off the kid gloves. It’s a no win for their irreverent type of comedy. I’ve watched SNL for over 40 years, they have never really taken political stuff seriously.

But I think the best example is Steven Colbert. His insane over the top right wing schtick from 20 years ago that we all thought was hilarious is now absolutely tame compared to what the right wing actually does and says. It’s tough to parody something by going to the extreme… when the person you are trying to parody says „hold my beer“.

God, this guy’s got to be going on a decade of wheeling out excuses for why comedy is hard now.

Maybe Judd’s just losing his touch. There is zero slope in comedy unless you solely focused on niche political comedy. Funny doesn’t stop.

Judd is actually a super smart and thoughtful guy. I think there’s an element of truth if you read his actual argument here.
