The author/writer is correct. Trump is not the cause but the symptom. He has been accelerating the process, just as how Regan accelerated the process to completely gut many things including worker rights, union rights etc.

The trouble is half the country doesn’t want a democracy. It’s too much work and requires too much thinking.
And the worse people got screwed by coastal wealthy people, the more they distrusted their own neighbors.
The U.S. was never a democracy. It’s a republic. Republics are designed from the start to favor the elites.

I hate when articles try to dilute or downplay how bad things are right now under this administration. They try to make it sound as if it’s always been this way. Democracy is messy but only since Trump did Congress stop working. We have never seen a more corrupt, incompetent, and fascist administration as we are today.
From what the article emphasizes, we are already lost. Except for small groups banding together to help immigrants stay out of the reach of ICE. Do we band together now in groups to defy the Rump Regime and force our beliefs of democracy on the GOP cult? Through education? Through religion like the, ‚**Ideology:** It includes elements of Christian Nationalism—the belief that the U.S. is a Christian nation that should be governed as such, often rejecting strict separation of church and state‘. Are the two murdered victims by ICE in Minneapolis just to be forgotten, or do we stand together in revolt? Running on the 80-yr timeclock, and disabled but still comment and support as much as possible to the Anti-Fascists groups I can find. Tell us where and what to do, not defeat us by psychoanalyst before we even get started to gather together. And please do not forget that Antifa is an organized terrorist group bent on the destruction of what some have called Democracy. Lord help us, if you believe.

Let’s get money out of politics
This is so important. Many have a short-term memory and forget what lead us to today in the first place. It most definitely didn’t start with the Orange Turd and not going to end with him. This is the ’natural‘ result of everything wrong with this country the past several decades. The only good thing he’s done is holding a huge mirror but so many choose to look away. When will we be brave enough and honest enough to take a deep look and recognize the problem?
It’s always been an oligarchy. Right from the beginning when the framers of the constitution wrote in that only landowners could vote. That was overturned partially thirty years later, but it would be another hundred until every American had the right. Since then a concerted effort has been made to make voting as difficult as possible.
Completely removing money from politics would be a good place to start. And ffs make the rules enforceable and then *enforce them!*
Having raised a kid with ADHD, I know the sorry effects of not following through with the rules. Also, I’m not just talking about a single aspect here, I mean *all* avenues for corruption, where those in governance are tempted to make decisions based on who just greased their palms. That is, back to basics: no person in office shall retain private holdings, stocks or other financial appurtanences, nor shall they accept gratuities of other gifts, strictly monetary or otherwise, while in office; and of course, corporate lobbying would go the way of the dodo.

Ehhh. The author makes some good points but it’s also a little disingenuous. I would probably have placed US in the flawed democracy category rather than straight oligarchy. This kind of argument really only serves to normalize the current extremism happening at a large scale in the US. While yes, the US has had problems and challenges to its democratic system, nothing in US history really compares to what’s going on right now. If we have any hope on beating this, people need to recognize the moment, not just commiserate that things weren’t perfect before Trump.
True democracy doesn’t work with 30%+ not participating while another 35% actively tries to burn it down
To be a Republican means you reject Democracy, they would have to be in a decade long coma to not acknowledge this simple fact.
