Given that the convoy was apparently stopped on a highway leading south, rather than east, out of Budapest there is a hypothesis on Ukrainian discussion groups that it was going to Serbia. Serbia is one of the most important ammo suppliers to Ukraine, particularly for rocket and tube artillery, but they don’t want this to be officially known (everyone who needs or wants to know, knows, but plausible deniability is still a thing), so the payment for that supply also needs to go under the radar. That may have been what was intercepted in Hungary. With other words, the convoy capture directly ensures a break in key ammo supply at the crucial point in time, exactly when Ukraine has some tactical successes.
