  1. Italic isn’t really a term for modern languages even though it’s technically correct

  2. FierceWeather on

don’t quote me on this, but i’m pretty sure they speak english in darwin

  3. It’s certainly an odd choice to put in white the places where indigenous population live. For example in Paraguay most of the inhabitants speak Spanish as their first language. Sure, there are plenty of Guarani speakers, but most people are bilingual, it’s not like Paraguay is this island of indigenous language, as also aren’t the Peru-Bolivian *altiplano* nor the Araucania region in Chile, Yucatan or Guatemala.

  4. Is this based on first language/language spoken at home/preferred language? The title of the post leaves a lot to be desired.

  5. So we’re just ignoring the colonisation of basically all of Africa by the Brits, French, and Belgians? As well as the colonisation of India?

Or are you only taking into account the largest languages or languages spoken by more than X% of people?

  6. TIL 1/3 of my state in Brazil doesn’t speak Portuguese. Better learn it right now.
