Interestingly, Photovoltaic was quite “young” as a sector considering all 5 countries started off with less than 1 GW in the year 2000, meaning this whole usage of solar energy thing only start to take off in the 21st century.
While this look impressive, I would still say the relevant measure would be „per capita“ or „per 1 milion square kilometer“. Or use EU and not Germany for the comparison.
Some data:
US and China areas are ~10 million square km, Germany and Japan: ~0.3M sq km (30 time less)
With population in millions we have: ~1400 for China, ~350 for US, ~120 Japan, ~80 for Germany
