>Lt.-Gen. Steve Boivin, commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command, told reporters at a defence and security conference in Ottawa Thursday that there are about 200 Armed Forces members deployed to the Middle East on six operations.
>Boivin disclosed the number after Defence Minister David McGuinty and his department refused to offer a figure earlier in the week.
>…Anand said Wednesday she was not aware that her parliamentary secretary, Rob Oliphant, told that town hall Ottawa does not support military action that isn’t sanctioned by the United Nations.
>“We do not support an American strike,” Oliphant was recorded telling constituents at the gathering, where Iranian diaspora activists were calling for military action.
>“That is the Canadian position. We do not believe in non-UN-sanctioned military action. We don’t do that,” he said.

Should be upto the UN. Canada should only ever be part of a peace keeper force. Never an attacking force. In my option.

In the Westminster Parliamentary system, the role of Parliament is solely to create legislation, not to control policy, whether domestic or international. That is the role of the cabinet.

Maybe it should be up to Parliament, but it isn’t. That’s not how our government works. I say we sit this one out until it’s called World War 3, tho.

It should be up to the people and we say hell no. I particularly am disappointed with the comments of our PM. Either you are for international law like you implied in Davos or you aren’t. Which is it?

Once again the CPC is full of it and trying to capitalize on manufactured outrage.
We are only entering this conflict if we get pulled in through article 5 and if that happens it won’t be up to parliament.

It most certainly should be up for debate if it ever becomes an option.
And honestly i wish there was a way Canadians could just vote on it, because I dont trust any politician’s take on it. Im very much on the „no“ side of thos one.

canada said no to invading iraq post 911 with the US pushing WMDs, and that was a popular decision in canada i think. im not sure i see even those arguments with iran now, with the states of iraq and afghanistan in recent hindsight.

Canada is not going to war with Iran. What Carney is speaking about is if one of the NATO allies in the middle East such as Greece or turkey get attacked and that country declares article 5, Canada must respond accordingly to protect that country

We shouldn’t be going to Iran at all. It’s a war of aggression that we have no reason to be in and we have an “ally” to the south that has disparaged our previous efforts and made overtures about annexing us. Keep us out.

We should send our F-35s & Gripens to help out. That’s what friends are for especially in these troubled times.

No one said that we’re getting involved right away, however, we are required to support NATO allies should they get involved.
This was abundantly clear and in no way was it portrayed as though we are joining this current conflict alongside Israel and The US.
I don’t know why every time there is a major world-changing event that requires our attention, The CPC has to create added drama and internal conflict.
It’s getting really old; I don’t know anyone that really cares for this constant contrarian attitude paired with a side of jaded envy.
That would be fine, but purposely adding more drama where there’s nothing actually there is such a waste of our collective efforts.

So let me get this straight. They neither know about how the government system works and they want to debate getting into a war that Canada has nothing to do with? How about FUCK NO!

We should be pouring resources into the defence of Canada’s sovereignty, building better infrastructure, boosting economy, not getting into another war to support a nation that threatens our sovereignty.
