This is basically an iPad for those who were going to use an iPad like a laptop anyway. Its affordable and accessible for those who don’t need a lot of power. For everyone else there is the Air. If your comment is going to be „only 8 gigs of ram, pass“ then you aren’t the target demographic.

    2. Apple just dropped the MacBook Neo. It starts at $599, and students get it for 499, so it’s clearly aimed at people who want the Mac experience without paying the mac price. It’s not built for heavy workflows, but for browsing, writing, streaming and light school stuff it makes sense. If you were already thinking about using an iPad like a laptop, this feels like a more practical option.

„What is old will become new again“.

It’s funny to see Apple reembracing the Mac colors from tube computers of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

This is very compelling given current memory prices. For a significant majority of people, this is all they’ll need. On a single core basis, A18 Pro is comparable to M4.

Unless you’re doing professional creative, development, and heavy-duty productivity applications that take advantage of multi-cores, likely not going to notice a huge difference.

I use my M2 iPad when I travel with a keyboard and honestly, I’d be more inclined to just buy this Neo on next upgrade cycle and keep my current iPad for another 2 years.

    5. chromebooks have been drinking apples milkshake for little while now in the education market. hopefully this will entice some schools because my kids school chromebooks and tablets are garbage

The A18 Pro is faster than an M1 chip specially in single core performance (slightly better than M3, great for web-browsing) and more efficient. Do not let the „A series“ naming fool you.

    7. Ive been looking for a dedicated device for writing that can also travel if necessary . I was considering an ipad air with a keyboard but this seems like a better fit for my specific use case

„One of the two USB-C ports is limited to USB 2.0 speeds of just 480 Mb/s“

      Damn.

if the a18 can run macos why not just an ipad with the magic keyboard and macos.

that keyboard looks like crap you would find on a chinese bootleg tablet cover for some android device

    11. If this is a truly scaled down macbook experience, this is no brainer recommendation for all the boomers and students in our lives.

I’m a bit confused, is this just the new base MacBook? Why rename it?

I get that the target is Chromebooks but I hope this pulls huge market share from Microslop. What Satya Nadella is doing to Win11 is criminal.

Does this thing have a camera like an iPad? Debating getting an iPad to shoot video for golf and a larger screen and that’s about all I need it for

The irony of having a Microslop Surface ad in these comments. They are losing hard right now.
