If Indian and Chinese interference no longer exists, maybe serious questions need to be asked about the purpose and continued role of CSIS.
The Q asked by a nat post reporter was a gotcha Q literally saying (yes or no).
I do get the validity of the Q however the tone was one of trying to corner him into an answer.
The messaging and communications from the Liberals during this trip has been nothing short of a disaster.
The Liberals are having the same issues they had during the Trudeau era, which is they struggle to craft careful messages and get everyone in their caucus to understand and reiterate.
They need to run a tight ship, they have to figure this out.
We really need to step up our game when it comes to deterring foreign interference and transnational repression. Otherwise India, China and the rest will keep testing us, which will only serve to eventually damage the trade relations with those countries that are painstakingly being built.
Very weak response coming almost a week after the initial damage was done. The official won’t face consequences? Okay, is that the GoC’s position or not, then? As it stands, it’s as clear as mud whether Carney’s statement here should be interpreted as the official GoC position or just his individual view. And if we’re using the standard that the parliamentary system would rightly and normally suggest — i.e. that the PM’s every word shouldn’t necessarily be conflated with the government’s official position because the cabinet gets its say as well — this statement does next to nothing to clear this issue up.
I agree with Chong that it’s troubling how seldom he seems to feel the need to take questions from the press. He is the leader of a democratic country and accountable to the Canadian people, period.
Off topic: I hope he eases off on the 1st point.. 2nd point, talking. I grow tired of hearing it at the start of responses.
> Carney also said Canada “will not tolerate foreign interference, transnational repression by anyone,” and told reporters that the government officials in question will not face consequences.
I mean… the fact the Liberals totally ignored all of CSIS’s warnings about China until someone there felt compelled to leak what was happening, the repeated attempts to sweep the entire thing under the rug prior to the final inquiry, the fact that we’ve still never been told who is on the list of compromised politicians we were assured existed, the total lack of progress in undertaking any of the proposed remedies such as a foreign agent registry and now jumping head first into deals with China and India despite zero resolution of the many problems we’ve had with them rather highlights their extreme and ongoing tolerance of foreign interference.
