When the going gets tough, the tough… hide away and let their foreign minister handle it.

It’s a tough spot. There’s money to be made, but there are also votes to be had.

Can we send Carney to Tehran, they may want some Canadian Uranium too.

This whole situation is super awkward.

Canada already had their own opinions on Iran.

Simultaneously, we probably shouldn’t appreciate the approach.

      Double edged sword

Looks like they couldn’t keep a lid on the Trudeau wing of the party forever lol.

    6. I get why he said it. Iran is an evil government, but the other side of this conflict are also two evil governments, and they have A LOT of sway over Canada, and Canadians with US owned media and effective social media influencing. Let’s not forget that most major social media platforms and media companies are fully controlled by Trump allies.

So saying Canada supports it while doing effectively nothing to help seemed like the best solution.

    7. lol.. They don’t even know what they’re doing…

Is this the principled response we get from a government that has been in power for 10 years? Flip-flop?

First we get. Iran bad, US good that they did this. Then we get, oh no, Trump bad, bad for US to do this. It’s like there are no principles with this ’new government‘. Oh wait, there weren’t any with the ‚old government‘ either. Perhaps they’re one in the same?

Probably changing their tune after it became clear Trump has no plan, the US was goaded into it by Israel and Hegseth’s “we’re just blowin shit up, rules of engagement are woke” psychopathic frat boy presser.

    9. Why has Carney been ignoring the media and showing contempt for them. It is part of the job of being PM.

Carney isn’t super available to the press….has anyone else noticed that?

I think the issue is that this is a mess.

Israel and the US took out the leadership, but there is no plan to put in an actual opposition or meaningfully support them – Trump seems to think regime change just magically happens, it doesn’t. This is a recipe for a weak state that is chaos for the civilians there.

Continual bombing as Israel does in Lebanon, Gaza is not a recipe for a new regime to emerge – it only benefits the bombing country. It is just chaos with lots of death.

So the choice now if the US isn’t actually doing regime change is to negotiate with what is left with the regime on a reformist track with lots of incentives.

    12. I’d forgive Carney if he said something to the effect of, “Even an archpedophile, and a genocider, are correct twice a day.”

Was the elementary girls school fake news? If it was real, whose bombs did it?

The PM supported taking out the nuclear weapons program. Pollievre and Carney agree on that.

I haven’t heard either leader call for or indicate any support for a wider conflict or regime change.

Carney fell into the hole. A few weeks after his Davos speech about the US routinely flouting international law and organizations, there goes Carney, cheering the US going on another illegal adventure! Carney’s hypocrisy is astounding.

    15. Mark Carney made a public statement putting forth the position of the Canadian government on the Iran war. It was nuanced, very carefully worded, and precise in terms of what it did and did not say. It was the language of international relations, not public relations.

Predictably, the press wanted to boil it down to a simple “yay or nay”, and it seemed closer to “yay”, so that’s what they went with. And that’s what they’re extrapolating from to come up with headlines like the one above.

It’s simply not true that he “initially backed the attack on Iran”. His statement was vague and noncommittal – it implied a lot without actually saying it. He very specifically did not say that we support the use of military force in the current situation.

    16. Canada is looking incredibly weak. We take one position then flip flop to another. We have to take a stand and stick by it or we look like the simpleton who plays both sides of the game.

In this case, the building of nuclear weapons in a country like Iran predicated on 5th century idealism is not something the world needs.

    17. HeavenInVain on

Shouldn’t have said anything more then Canadians in Iran get out or hunker down.

Not our war, not our issues, so stop running into the house on fire and let them try to put it out
