Building an entire data center solely on renewable energy using experimental energy storage that has never been done before at this scale? What could possibly go wrong?

Considering the current market trends, it’s more important for Google to say whatever they have to in order to secure the land and building rights. AI is about land grabbing more than anything else, and by any means necessary.

That includes ~~lying~~ plausible deniability.

From this article is not completely clear how much of the „almost all“ of their power will come from newly developed green sources. The article mentions Google developing green power with Xcel Energy, but if Xcel Energy already had green power and Google ends up buying that green power, then this is just a big electricity shell game for talking points. But if they’re legitimately making new sources of green power for their data center then this is probably the best we can hope for at this point.
