I see this is 10 years old, but thx for bringing attention to it OP. I remember wayyy back during discussions about how society is increasingly tolerating everything, and ppl were saying „you’ll see, they’ll even normalize pedos soon“ and I thought that was one step too far, like, how could they even try that one. Lo and behold, titles like this one. Rationalization as always, „a disorder, not a crime“ is a brilliant way to sugarcoat it. A diabolically brilliant way, at that

This has been the medical attitude for a very long time.
Pedophilia is seen as a disorder and is treated as such in many countries. Germany, for example, will put pedos in with drug addicts and mentally disabled patients because the crime is seen as ‚out of their control‘ and they get given therapy and rehabilitation until they are deemed not a risk to the general public when it comes to committing the same crimes again.
That being said.. no just fucking no, any functioning adult who commits such an act knows exactly what they are doing/did and deserve nothing short of a long drop with a short stop.
Anyone who is not a functioning adult should not be left in a situation where such an act could be committed.

Paedophilia itself is the *attraction* to children. It *is* an actual disorder in the DSM-5 — psychologists and therapists treat it, and are trained to treat it. People can receive various treatments and medications that help to diminish, or even in some cases, completely eliminate their attraction to children. People with this disorder are actually actively encouraged to seek this treatment *before* they ever act on the urges, so harm to children can be prevented. Every psychologist and therapist in the world would tell you this.
Actually acting on the urges is a crime, not a disorder. If somebody has acted on these urges, and they inform a psychologist/therapist about that, the psychologist/therapist is compelled by law to report their crimes and will not provide any treatment.

The issue is when we immediately label anyone with these thoughts and feelings as a criminal, they hide those thoughts and feelings and more people are hurt as a result of it. Imagine a world where people who do not offend but are attracted to children are able to get support so they can continue to not offend instead of feeling like they are horrible people for the cards that they were dealt.

Disorders dont involve victims
As a psychologist. I get so freaking frustrated by people trying to explain crimes in terms of „psychology“ or „mental illness“…and sometimes I honestly wonder if psychology is just taking everything too far.
There are reasons that there is age of consent. Anyone who engages in this behavior is breaking the law, because a child cannot consent. So, yeah, it is a crime.
the i never hear from those assholes is that this destroys the psych of kids, they do not want this, hell even dont know what it is happening to them… so it crosses lines that are beyond discussible… it makes me sick to read such a headline.
