He called it last year and the world didnt listen .
A pragmaticist at work right here ,Carney has been leaning this way since day one , he quickly adapted his stategey when Canada was left alone as the world refused to accept realities.
Pivoted in approach with America while never getting off the path he has seen from the start , all while patiently waiting for the others to wake up.
The aggressive travel, the defense spending increases it was all leading up to what he predicted and accepted.
The Davos speech about middle powers banding together, but also an article he wrote for the Economist last year, talking about „variable geometry“ in international relations, and how the future was likely to be built on smaller, issue-specific alliances rather than the big institutions of the 20th century.
He talked about aligning and cooperating on issues where there are mutual interests, rather than insisting on only working with partners with whom there is perfect agreement on everything.
One example of such a custom-made alliance is the Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine.
And (possibly controversial opinion) the Gaza peace board could in theory have been another one, if the people running it weren’t so utterly inept and corrupt. I think that might be part of why Carney was initially on board with it, before it became clear what a total mess it was going to be.
Unpopular opinion but I kinda wish Carney would spend more energy helping solve the food and housing crisis than being the silver tongue for globalists.
By that I mean to say that it’s all well and good to give great speeches to elites in Davos and to travel the world trying to replace American trade, however, I and many other Canadians am having a hard time feeding my family of 5 and covering my rising housing costs, everything from insurance, taxes, food, fuel, clothing is getting more expensive way faster than my wages can account for and frankly I’m starting to lose faith in the government’s ability or will to help people in my demographic(52k income, partner works part time and maga 10k, 3 children). It feels like they tell us what they want us to hear but unless you work for the government, you aren’t keeping pace with the declining economy.
TLDR: Maybe the party for the people doesn’t actually care for the people?
It’s weird to me that this is being seen as a positive tbh. This is the country whose government murdered a Canadian on Canadian soil. I understand not just going full cut off trade mode, but taking trips and acting like there is nothing wrong with the things their regime is doing is pretty insane to me personally
One member of Mark Carney’s caucus, who is a Sikh Canadian, has criticized Carney’s openness to the Indian government. Many Sikhs want independence from India.
