One of the major factors holding back electrifying trucking is the lack of a megawatt charging network. This is primarily due to the upgrades needed to the grid, with many comparing the charging rate needed to that required to power a small town.
There is however a simple solution, highlighted in this editorial by CleanTechnica.
They note that using a large battery as a buffer allows the battery to trickle charge during downtimes and then deliver high levels of charging on demand. They note with the falling cost of batteries this could be enabled for only half a million dollars in the near future.
The article notes that this would be similar if not cheaper than hydrogen , which in many cases also relies on onsite production and storage, and in addition the service could benefit from the addition of onsite solar, and the large battery could also be used for grid arbitrage.
