      Reminder that Dorsey is the one who founded Twitter, only to sell it to Elmo (who then massacred most of the head count before AI was even dominant). Dorsey leaves with billions-in-hand, rank-and-file employees get thrown out, America suffers when the site’s content (their own contributed content BTW) that allowed the site to be popular in the first place, is turned to slop and propaganda.

      These people exist to prey on a short-term opportunity, squeeze out every drop of profit, and throw the carcass overboard. AI is just another tool in their toolbox, they would do the same with or without it.

      I’m not sure I buy it. I’m certain AI is having an impact, but big companies are constantly looking for reasons to lay off swaths of employees. AI is just the latest excuse.

      What tools are they using that work for them that are not working for other people?

      Sick of seeing people claim AI is killing jobs and simultaneously “just an excuse”. Is it really that everyone is just lying with the same line? Or is AI actually useful enough now as it stands to be cutting the workforce?

      I’m sure there will be some layoffs as a result of AI, but I’m not convinced Jack Dorsey is someone I trust to give us something besides blind hype.

      I don’t buy it. His business was bloated and they don’t seem to be doing that great operationally, so they’re using AI as a cop out

      It’s interesting to see the contrast in opinion on reddit vs x. I think we should also mention that Dorsey gave his employees a generous severance package including a minimum of 20 weeks of salary and 6 months of health insurance.

      But yeah, restructuring of teams is happening all across the tech space. And yes AI is definitely a facilitator. Expect more of this in 2026.

      This is 20% AI, 40% outsourcing, and 60% expect the remaining employees to do twice as much work.

      Even if you take it at face value it’s still not a good thing. Let me explain.

      If AI makes you so much more efficient to run, and you have no way invest that extra man power to grow your business even faster (you just grew headcount by 50% for free), you’re admitting that you’re no longer a growth tech stock, but a utility company in maintenance mode.

      I was laid off by Docusign last year in October and got hired by block in January just to hear this news. The tech world is UGLY!

      None of these companies are actually laying off due to AI, but they’re definitely using it as a scapegoat to bloat their stock prices and hire offshore Indians

      If they need to lay off half the force because people are getting so productive, then the remaining people should be getting raises right? Right?

      Cannot wait for one of these companies that go all in on AI to get completely wiped out by a single AI hallucination overnight.

      (Yes, I realize that many of these companies just use AI as the excuse while they are covering up poor performance and job offshoring)

      I’m not sure about the argument that this is exclusively about using AI as an excuse/reason. These people don’t even need an excuse, if they can run their companies with less staff they’ll get rid of people and the market often rewards them (if they’re a listed company) with a higher stock price. So who would the excuse even be for? The staff being fired would know if this is bullshit and if you’re fired it’s not like „you’re being replaced by a chat bot“ would be much comfort even if it were true.

      I’m totally in favour of assuming the statements from CEO are lies but I’m not sure I understand the angle here. Maybe they’re just covering up imminent financial problems (which would make total sense) but it seems to be quite a common trend.

      It feels just as likely this is typical executive behaviour – I.e. they really believe they can do the same amount of work at the same quality as before with dramatically less people even if this isn’t connected to any kind of reality. Vibe leadership as it were.

      Offense, but if anyone is working for these major tech companies and thinks their job is anything but temporary that’s their fault.

      Hell. My brother has fired him self before just to get a severance package. Tech is a joke.

      If things continue like this, pretty soon there will be no customers and therefore no need for payment transaction devices such as those provided by Block.

      This is galaxy-brain level leadership.

      Don’t read into this bullshit doomer rhetoric, people. It’s just fake/sensational headlines. Goldman Sachs and many other companies have discovered that there has been no gain in productivity at all in 2025 from AI. Just excuses to lay people off and make companies as lean as possible

      lol. Got to batten down the hatches and get ready for the k shaped economy and stagflation. That’s what’s really going on.

      Companies like block are feature rich. They don’t need to grow their products any more. They are good enough for the next decade. So cut your r&d and operating expenses to the bone and coast for a few years. It’s quiet quitting product development.

      If he’s right then expect the markets to collapse and protests and riots to start. You can’t just throw 50% of people out of work with a plan to deal with it.

      I’d love to see people band together to create companies of our own and opt not to do business with people like this.

      New tech companies don’t work with this guy, stores don’t sell to him, restaurants use their right to refuse service. Basically make these tech bros live on a different economy and never give them money

      Why do the rich think if they lay off everyone and lobby against paying people, that they’ll still somehow have money to buy the crap they sell?

      „Oh I lost my job. Groceries are ridiculously expensive. Can’t afford a house. Can barely afford rent. Drive s beater that’s broke down and I can’t afford to fix it. Every subscription is going up yet still putting ads in my face. AI is everywhere. But let me go buy Product (TM) from my favorite Billionaire CEO. I have the money. Somehow.“
