Als Inder, der seit 5 Jahren hier in Deutschland lebt, muss ich sagen … ich glaube, ich bin offiziell besessen von deutschem Käsekuchen. Möchten Sie, dass ich noch andere traditionelle Kuchen probiere?

    Traditional German Cheese Cake use „Quark“, a diary product easy to get in Germany and a little bit diffrent as „Topfen“ in Austria but not very popular somewhere else.

  2. It’s because it is made of „Quark“, a soft cheese variant that does not exist outside of the German-speaking countries, and parts of Eastern Europe. Quark is not as sour as the soft cheese usually used in other parts of the world, and more creamy.

    Because we managed to engineer everything out of a cow that is humanly possible and we use different creations for different things.

    We often don’t use cream cheese to make cheesecake, we use Quark. We also make it less sweet. The bottom of a german cheese cake is often non-existent or – according to Google translate – shortcrust pasty (as opposed to cookie crumbles with butter).

    To me, an american cheesecake tastes like sweetened cream cheese that would be a great bread spread. German cheese cake tastes nothing like cream cheese usually.

    Because we traditionally use Quark instead of cream cheese, which is a different product. Though today many people also use american cheese cake recipes, which use cream cheese. The one in the pic looks more like american.

    Also, the dough is usually different. Germany traditionally uses a normal cake dough, americans something more like cookie crumble dough.

    Thirdly, our recipe is usually very simple. Mostly sugar and Quark. No lemon or other additional favors.

    And finally, if you like cheese cake, you might enjoy an other version: Zupfkuchen. Very common and also very nice. Same principle, but with added chocolate dough.

  5. German cheese cake is an actually baked cake with several ingredients, with quark being the biggest, and not cream cheese mixed with sugar on top of ready made cookie crumbs, which is the definition of cheese cake in many other countries.

    You should try Zupfkuchen next. It’s also is a Quark based cake, like cheesecake but with chocolate.

    Bienenstich, Frankfurter Kranz, Donauwelle, gedeckter Apfelkuchen are my other German cake favorites. 

    Search for a Konditorei near you – usually they have the widest selection of cakes. 

  8. You can make your own, its really simple, just buy a Dr. Oetker Mischung and if you want to have real fun, you make every part yourself on a second try, then you know how its done 🙂

    Because it is not a Cheesecake, it is Käsekuchen 🙂 It is another universe. Made not of cream cheese, but Quark. There are many sorts of Käsekuchen, but they are all great. If you go to Austria, you will find even more. But it is called there Topfenkuchen. My favorite one is with Mohn.

  11. Try Streuselkuchen with Apple, blueberry or Cherry, Sacher also good. Warm Apfelstrudel wot vanilla sauce is great but for me without raisin.

  12. Cheesecake and Käsekuchen aren’t the same thing. You can get cheesecake here as well. I like them both.

    Because Käsekuchen uses Quark, which has less fat and more protein, not cream cheese.

    Try Schwarzwälder Kirsch, donauwelle and pflaumenkuchen ( afaik the most popular traditional cakes

  16. Try a piece of „Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte“ – not necessarily in the southwest (Schwarzwald) but preferably from a real Konditor and not supermarket stuff.

    Ohhh, then you have to try a (at best homemade) warm apple-pie/apple-strudel with whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream („warmer Apfelstrudel mit Schlagsahne und Vanilleeis“)!

    The best are the ones with a lattice top made of dough.

    I bake a lot of cheesecake. The picture you posted looks like a cheesecake made with cream cheese and not „quark“ like others suggested. This is also sometimes called „New York Style“ and is not the traditional German kind.

    It also looks like it is very well made using a water bath, while being baked. You can tell by the very even texture.

  19. I make German cheesecake as well as NY cheesecake and actually like the NY version more. Yea it’s a lot more unhealthy and I can eat a lot less of it but judging taste alone I prefer the NY one.
