    1. IMHO, this is all part of an elaborate corporate protection campaign to influence regulations that will make it too expensive for open source and other small players to compete. They’re using a cult-like sprawling organization of Silicon Valley groups all centred around the Effective Altruism movement.

PauseAI itself shares a founder with other Effective altruism groups that lead back to big billionaire backers.

Here’s a great background article on the subject,:

      https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/30/ai-debate-culture-clash-dc-silicon-valley-00133323

      > As Washington grapples with the rise of artificial intelligence, a small army of adherents to “effective altruism” has descended on the nation’s capital and is dominating how the White House, Congress and think tanks approach the technology.

      > The Silicon Valley-based movement is backed by tech billionaires and began as a rationalist approach to solving human suffering. But some observers say it has morphed into a cult obsessed with the coming AI doomsday.

      > The prophets of the AI apocalypse are boosted by an avalanche of tech dollars, with much of it flowing through Open Philanthropy — a major funder of effective altruist causes, founded and financed by billionaire Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna, that has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into influential think tanks and programs that place staffers in key congressional offices and at federal agencies.

      > Many of those researchers claim that EA’s billionaire backers — who often possess close personal and financial ties to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic — are trying to distract Washington from examining AI’s real-world impact, including its tendency to promote racial or gender bias, undermine privacy and weaken copyright protections.

      > They also worry that EA’s tech industry funders are acting in their self-interest, working to wall off leading AI firms from competition by promoting rules that, in the name of “AI safety,” lock down access to the technology.

      > Despite those concerns, the sheer amount of money being funneled into Washington by Open Philanthropy and other EA-linked groups has given the movement significant leverage over the AI and biosecurity debate in Washington.

      > AI and biosecurity staffers funded by Open Philanthropy are embedded in congressional offices at the forefront of potential AI rules, including all three of the Senate offices tapped by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to investigate the technology. And the more than half-dozen skeptical AI and biosecurity researchers that spoke with POLITICO say the dense network of Capitol Hill and agency staffers — financed by hundreds of millions of EA dollars — is skewing how policymakers discuss AI safety, which otherwise remains a relatively niche field in Washington

      > Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about EAs in Washington, however, is their almost messianic belief in the apocalyptic potential of AIs lurking just over horizon — and their unshaking certainty that they alone can prevent human extinction.

      > Dobbe said the spread of EA ideas at Berkeley, and across the Bay Area, was supercharged by money that tech billionaires were pouring into the movement. He singled out Open Philanthropy’s early funding of the Berkeley-based Center for Human-Compatible AI, which began with a $5.5 million grant from the group in 2016. Open Philanthropy has since put another $11 million into the organization, which also receives support from the Musk-backed Future of Life Institute.

    2. „Just one week before the world’s second-ever global summit on artificial intelligence, protesters of a small but growing movement called “Pause AI” demanded that the world’s governments regulate AI companies and freeze the development of new cutting edge artificial intelligence models.

They say that the development of these models should only be allowed to continue if companies agree to let them be [thoroughly evaluated to test their safety first](https://pauseai.info/proposal). Protests took place across thirteen different countries, including the U.S., the U.K, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Norway on Monday.

The protestors say their goal is to get governments to regulate the companies developing frontier AI models, including OpenAI’s Chat GPT. They say that companies are not taking enough precautions to make sure their AI models are safe enough to be released into the world.

… „[One protestor] says that her main reason for protesting is because she fears that there could be even more dangerous consequences that come from frontier artificial intelligence models in the future.

“We have a host of highly qualified knowledgeable experts, Turing Award winners, highly cited AI researchers, and the CEOs of the AI companies themselves [saying that AI could be extremely dangerous].”

She’s especially concerned about the growing number of experts who warn that improperly controlled AI could lead to catastrophic consequences. A report commissioned from the U.S. government, published in March, warned that “the rise of advanced AI and AGI [artificial general intelligence] has the potential to destabilize global security in ways reminiscent of the introduction of nuclear weapons.”

Currently, the largest AI labs are attempting to build systems that are capable of outperforming humans on nearly every task, including long-term planning and critical thinking. If they succeed, increasing aspects of human activity could become automated, ranging from mundane things like online shopping, to the introduction of autonomous weapons systems that could act in ways that we cannot predict.

This could lead to an “arms race” that increases the likelihood of “global- and WMD [weapons of mass destruction]-scale fatal accidents, interstate conflict, and escalation,” [according to the report](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62c4cf7322be8ea59c904399/65e7779f72417554f7958260_Gladstone%20Action%20Plan%20Executive%20Summary.pdf).

Experts still don’t understand the inner workings of AI systems like Chat GPT, and they worry that in more sophisticated systems, our lack of knowledge could lead us to dramatically miscalculate how more powerful systems would act.

Depending on how integrated AI systems are into human life, they could wreak havoc, and gain control of dangerous weapons systems, leading many experts to worry about the possibility of [human extinction](https://time.com/6898967/ai-extinction-national-security-risks-report/). “Those warnings aren’t getting through to the general public, and they need to know,” she says.

As of now, machine learning experts are somewhat divided about exactly how risky further development of artificial intelligence technology is. Two of the three godfathers of deep learning, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, have publicly stated that they believe there is a risk that the technology could lead to human extinction.“

    3. It’s so funny that it’s always the people that know the least about some new bit of tech that are the most scared of it.

AI is not going to be the thing that makes your life worse. New and more efficient tools have by far and wide made it easier for smaller companies to thrive and therefore widening the middle class and enlarging small businesses. I work in software and AI is an absolute win.

It sucks to need to change, but if we don’t change, we won’t improve as a species and we won’t be able to tackle the problems that lay ahead of us. Wake up and *use* AI, don’t protest the progression of technology.

    4. not to waste your click!

      – The „Pause AI“ movement demands that the development of AI come to an end.

      – Thirteen countries have seen protests calling on governments to regulate AI.

      – Safety issues with AI and possible effects on employment are of concern.

      – Experts have cautioned about the risks associated with sophisticated AI models, including Turing Award winners.

    5. revolution2018 on

This is an easy one. They do it for the exact same reason climate deniers protest windmills and solar farms.

We have a handful of billionaires that on the surface may seem dumber than a defective doorknob, but really they are not stupid. They know AI threatens their money so they go on TV spouting stupid shit designed to scare the country’s gullible idiots so they’ll go out and scream NEW THING BAD Then their representative represent them by trying to stop the threat to rich people.

It’s the exact same thing as climate denial done by same people using the same methods.

    6. We all must accelerate so we get our Full Dive VR and Longevity Escape Velocity utopias. Do not listen to those luddites. AI will set us free and enable a (simulated) life of adventure and many riches. I don’t see any downsides…

    7. Pause wont happen. Its the nuclear arms race all over again, and the little guys are just left waiting for the AI to destroy us all.
