I wonder how chimpanzee physiology processes alcohol compared to humans. Do they get drunk easier? Do they clear the alcohol faster or more slowly?

Just about all mammals like to get hammered – I’ve seen hedgehogs getting pissed as rats on windfalls in orchards, and horses desparately trying to lick up a spilled glass of cider (my spilled glass of cider, and if anyone is licking it up, it’s me…) and so on. Chimps probably do it with more style though.

I always wonder if animals that get drunk end up hungover. I also wonder if any have shown evidence of any kind of alcohol abuse.

So what do you do for a living, Leroy?

I collect urine from wild chimps which are powerful enough to pull my arms off. It’s honest work, though the turnover is quite high.

I know this is natural. But I love the idea of science being thrown off by a lonely drunk feeding Chimps booze in the jungle.

    6. How do they ferment the fruit? Is it really just plentiful and found everywhere? You’d figure some are too rotten and moldy to eat, do they have a way to sniff out the good ones? Do they go so far as to pile all their fruit together and wait for it to start fermenting?
