“Met Éireann has confirmed it is working on a new locally based weather warning system that will be installed by the end of the year.

Minister for Housing James Browne confirmed that the county-wide alerts will be replaced by a polygon-based weather warning system….

Polygon-based systems have been in operation in the United States for the last 20 years and they have replaced county and state-wide warnings which were regarded as too broad and not specific enough.

They are so called because forecasters use polygon-shaped areas for forecasting at the local level.” None the wiser as to what a polygon shape looks like but there you have it.

    2. They have an extremely tough job. Like Ophelia, shifted slightly further north than expected but had people whinging about it but then don’t issue a warning when it flooded and still get crucified.

As for AI weather models replacing the models they currently use, if it was upto the AI models we would have had a fair few spells of snow this winter. So wouldn’t go backing them yet.

    3. About time. It was ridiculous that you had inland schools closing, public transport cancelled because of bad coastal weather.in the same county.

Is this new Met Eireann forecasting development because Micheal Martin and ministers Browne and Moran tried to throw Met Eireann under the bus by *blaming* them (along with Local Government, Town Councils, planners and even the local residents and business communities) for the recent Storm Chandra flooding?

    5. They could make a fortune via gerrymandering of their warning areas in exchange for „donations“. Want your estate/school/workplace in Dublin to be part of the West Connemara warning area? A little brown envelope in the right hands and who knows what could happen?

    8. Are they going to send emergency text alerts? Like it’s in other countries?

    9. Makes sense. Galway alone is 160km wide. No point schools closing when there is no need for example.
