It’s a parish newsletter for a specific demographic in Dublin, and this is hot gossip in the parish.

This is the rugby club that plays in the All Ireland League (the top level of club rugby in Ireland), not the school.
Carlos Spencer is a big name coach for that level of rugby, a former Super Rugby player and All Black etc.
It’s newsworthy in the context of Irish sport.

Because the Irish media are mainly a bunch of south Dubliners who believe Dublin is the only places that exists

You could ask that about any sports news headline, but apparently some people care about sports and want updates on what’s happening.
locksymania on
The first part? Carlos Spencer was an important figure in world rugby as a player. What he’s doing in his subsequent coaching career will be of genuine interest to people who follow rugby, particularly those invested in Leinster schools rugby or the AIL. That’s not a tiny subset of the Irish Times readership. The fact that he’s gone after a short time implies something went wrong. Again, that will be of interest to many IT readers.
Exciting_Revenue645 on
I agree it shouldn’t be national news but how the fuck did a school team get Carlos Spencer in as a coach?
Edit: ohhh the AIL team, still a pretty big name for that level

Irish Times is really bad.
PukeUpMyRing on
Partially to do with the demographics of the Irish Times readership and partially to do with the fact that Spencer is a former All Black international who played for New Zealand for 10 years. Getting someone of his playing pedigree to coach a school team is somewhat newsworthy in an of itself.
Edit: Spencer coached the AIL team, not the school team.

It’s punishing you for forgetting to disable notifications on your news app. Also for installing an app in the first place instead of just going to the web site when you want to read the news.

The Irish Times publishing parochial news about the goings-on of the nation’s elite in the affluent bubbles of Dublin?!!!
Well slap my ass and call me Gemima! I am shocked!
Edit: to be fair, Terenure College is an AIL (semi-professional) team, so perhaps I am being a bit harsh.

FYI for those saying its because of my notification filters, I only have Top Stories selected. Sports was always specifically untitled 😇
Also I thought it was the school Terenure College!
Carlos Spencer – One of the best players of all time for the All Blacks and most notable coach in the AIL.
This is notable news for rugby fans in Ireland.

I’m sad to see him go. Don’t know how good of a coachhe is, but my god what a player he was. He’s who Finn Russell wished he was

There’s a recent uptick in boring local news making national media headlines for some reason. Particularly stuff like this as well as random petty crime where someone stole a couple of hundred € worth of stuff from a shop or incredibly procedural WRC or RTB cases. These now seem to make it into the Irish Times, Independent etc more so than even the tabloids.
We have a client media that is completely uncritical of anything the government ever does.
On the front page of the Independent website at the minute, there almost as many articles about the BAFTAs, that happened 3 days ago, as there are about Irish politics. There are 3 mentions of the word „Taoiseach“ (zero mentions of the words Martin or Harris) and 9 mentions of the word „Trump“. This despite the fact that Leaders Questions is happening at the time of writing and most of the afternoon in the Dáil will be questions relating to the govt’s most recent total ineptitude regarding SNAs.
