Well known facts since the early 90’s and no one in the world has a plan to solve it, good times ahead

Let’s just tax the new cash and asset strapped generation more to cover this?

There will be no pensions for anyone below 40. It is time for some honesty. We will neither reproduce sufficiently, nor accept the level of migration required.

My parents are approaching retirement and consolidated/restructured their pensions last year and they were told they will probably be the last generation to get the state pension automatically, everyone going forward will be means tested. Obviously nothing from the government about it but if private financial institutions are saying and planning for it then something must be happening in the background

The solution is quite simple. We need a baby boom, the government needs to make conditions more attractive for people to have children, by giving incentives like free childcare, tax breaks etc

They robbed a heap of money out of my pension a few years ago. Most people wont forget that. And they havent bothered protecting pensions since then wither, so whenever they feel like it they will be back to rob some more.

I think I’d genuinely rather watch the nation fall apart than be expected to pay more of my money into the pensions of generations who have consistently voted Fine Gael/Fianna Fail and pulled the housing ladder up behind them. I have my pension privately sorted since 22. G’luck to nannies and grandads around the country, my sympathy is at zero. Back to work.

Most millennials will be able to inherit the houses that gained value exponentially over the past 40 years, will probably be fine. The generations after that? Fuck knows

The pension age will raise by a few years, it’s inevitable – there is no other way to pay for this which isn’t politically toxic. The impact of raising the age by even a year or two has a huge impact on the numbers.
It was a pity that SF led the opposition to this proposal last time, the government (for once) was being politcally brave and looking to the future when they proposed it.

People are saying that population growth is the solution, either through children or immigration, but I think this is a short-term fix at best. Any system that requires infinite growth will break eventually – no different than a pyramid scheme.
We need to re-think how we do look after our retirees completely. Government is currently paying today’s pensioners with contributions being paid by today’s employees, instead of how it theoretically should work whereby a fund is built up over years and invested and dividends alone can sustain that person later in life.
Ireland has an excess of corporate tax that they are afraid to spend because it may not last forever. One of the ways that it could be put to very safe use is via a sovereign wealth fund, similar to how Norway handles their oil revenues. In our case, we would need to build things up over time, and that probably does mean things like later retirement age, means testing, etc. but long-term, we need to change the system or we are just kicking the can further down the road.
For once, I agree that the government can’t solve this overnight. But by god, they had better start to solve it now, because they can’t pull out that line in 2077 and pretend they weren’t warned!

We all talk about this as a bad things, maybe its a blessing in disguise. Lower birth rates mean fewer people, fewer people means, less carbon emissions.

Nothing about making it easier for people to get a home of their own, or give workers more time and money to help with living costs? Instead, they’ll raise the retirement age and import more people.
They try everything except actually helping the people.

France is facing a much bigger problem with pensions much sooner than we are. I am not saying what is happening is not disastrous but every traditional approach to solving the problem has massive downsides. Even the non traditional approaches to try fix the problems have massive holes in it.

I wonder if it makes any difference, but most of the immigrants currently working in the country are not going to receive any pension, but are paying taxes as if they were. You need to work for at least 10 years in Ireland to qualify for the Irish State Pension.
Most immigrants leave well before that. Some paying very high taxes as the ones in IT and pharma.
