Do any other provinces offer anything similar to what OSAP did on a grants to loan ratio basis? There wasn’t anything like that when I went to school in Alberta and my wife was saddled with student debt for years from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
When I came to Ontario to do my Masters I had a few years of work under my belt and some money saved up so I didn’t need OSAP at all, but the net between the grant and loan is free money so I wasn’t going to say no.
I don’t know Ford has the balance right here but on my experience alone there was certainly room for improvement and the Liberals are just as responsible for not figuring it out when they had a chance.
This might be the issue that finally sinks Doug Ford, these are pretty drastic sudden changes that will hit families across the GTA and Ontario hard as well as motivate younger demographics.
But I am bearish on Ontario voters. I doubt it will even have a lasting impact since it’s coming so early in his term.
