  1. > Early in the ceremony a loud tic in the form of a profoundly offensive term was heard by many people in the room. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage at the time, and we apologise unreservedly to them, and to all those impacted. We would like to thank Michael and Delroy for their incredible dignity and professionalism.

    > During the ceremony, John chose to leave the auditorium and watch the rest of the ceremony from a screen, and we would like to thank him for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him.

    > We take full responsibility for putting our guests in a very difficult situation and we apologise to all. We will learn from this, and keep inclusion at the core of all we do, maintaining our belief in film and storytelling as a critical conduit for compassion and empathy.

  2. What I’m most confused by is that the broadcast runs on a delay for this very reason, yet they still didn’t catch it on the televised broadcast?

Apparently nobody even spoke to the both of them after the whole humiliating incident. Pointless to talk about fake apologies now.

  4. Probably a stupid bet was made somewhere whether someone would do this on live TV during the show

A „free Palestine“ comment was edited out of the show, showing it was absolutely possible.

I love this phrase ”…will learn” admitting that they haven’t yet learned at the time of the statement.
    How about “…we learned”

“Are there any offensive racist words you uncontrollably shout” could have been a good question before extending invitation to this guy. Maybe could have had him stay at home with a very nice gift bag

If you have to learn that it isnt ok to international air two black men getting called the N word (be it untentional or not) and use it as engagement bait. Then I am not sure their is any teaching in the world that can help

Offense is obviously the first and correct response when something like this happens.

Then it’s time for intelligence and understanding to take the stage and present reasonable reactions and dialog.

Upon learning the man has tourettes, instantly put together this is an unfortunate event for everyone involved.

That shit should have been edited out,  as none of the viewers are aware of the real situation and based their judgment on missing facts, and can only come to the wrong conclusion.  Like we all did.

This is likely most of the people’s first time experiencing tourettes there.

The answer is not punishment or abuse.  It’s in understanding and a willingness to do better in the future

I can’t stop thinking of the South Park tourettes episode at all this 🤭😏

What exactly will they learn? Not to broadcast the n word being shouted at black people? They didn’t know this before?

  12. The issue is primarily that nobody from BAFTA got with Jordan or Lindo to immediately check in with them after this happened, that they didnt edit it out of the broadcast, and Cummings half hearted apology „if anyone was offended“.

  13. Larry David tried to warn us about inviting tourette’s people to public events and we didn’t listen.

Can the internet use this as a learning opportunity as well? Some genuinely embarrassing takes have been shat out over the last 24 hours.

They aren’t gonna learn. They got their desired outcome, everyone’s talking about it.

  16. Having Tourette’s syndrome and going to an event like this, to me, is basically the same thing as having some sort of gastrointestinal disease that leads to chronic diarrhea, while having a very weakend anal sphincter, and going to sit in a hot tub with a big group of people.

So they get to rage bait and then apologize. They get the ratings and everyone else gets the fallout.
