It definitely should have been bleeped out for the broadcast, since it wasn’t aired in real time.

However, I think it’s important to read this part of the article:

    > Davidson, who was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at 25 and whose experiences inspired the BAFTA-nominated film “I Swear,” lives with tics that can include involuntary vocal outbursts. Addressing the room, Cumming said, “You may have noticed some strong language in the background there. This can be part of how Tourette syndrome shows up for some people, as the film explores that experience.”

The movie Davidson was there for is exactly about the situation that happened— and is the reality he lives with and faces every day.

I hope this can be seen as a moment of education instead of people lashing out at him for something he has no control over. It’s not from a place of hate- he involuntarily says bad words, because that’s how his particular experience with this condition manifests itself.

The fact that the don’t bleep it on the 2hr delay is all I need to see to know this was intentional by BAFTA. They didn’t make the audience member have a vocal outburst, but they certainly set up the situation where it was very likely and then played it unedited for the world to see.

I don’t think BAFTA is a racist org. I think they’re desperate for any type of press and were willing to let an insane controversy happen to get it.

My question is were they explicitly told that this was a characteristic of Tourettes? If I met someone with this characteristic I would want to know beforehand. Words still hurt especially when it’s televised.

Is it bad that I think he should’ve maybe not be there if he had Tourettes?

Like I understand he can’t control it and I understand that it’s a terrible condition but like wouldnt it just be better not to have him there if its televised event so save embarrassment for everyone?

Davidson didn’t mention Jordan or Lindo in his apology.  Telling.
If I involontarily injure someone, the absolute least I can do is apologize. And not “sorry *if* anyone was offended” style.  Public injury demands public apology.

The BBC as far as I know has a policy not to censor Tourette’s tics, so as to distinguish them from deliberately offensive speech and to de-stigmatize the syndrome. This policy has been in place since the 80s. Copied from another post

  8. The BBC are the ones that deserve the bulk of the blame here. You mean you can’t bleep out an offensive comment with a tape delay? 🤦‍♂️

This is exactly what’s wrong with this world. Who cares this shouldn’t be news. It was clearly harmless

  10. An unfortunate, yet insignificant public incident has once again made social media entirely incomprehensible in its reaction.

  11. idk how hot my take is but if they’re gonna have a person with Tourettes at the event in the first place then they should *knowingly* not censor him and leave it in. We need to learn to live with people who have disabilities instead of censoring them and making them even more invisible than they already are just because people feel uncomfortable.

The cool thing to do of the BBC would be to address the situation and use it as an opportunity to stand behind the poor guy and turn this into a learning experience for everyone. Yeah, I bet people feel uncomfortable, imagine how the dude feels having to live with this disorder and now wishing he had never even been there at the event.

As someone who has a cousin with a mental disability I’m really annoyed how two-faced people are about their ‚acceptance‘ of people with disabilities.

Why would you ever trust british folks to do the right thing when it came to minorities.

Neither Golden Globes nor Academy Awards nominated I Swear for anything.

Didnt watch and so curious: Did he blurt out anyhting else offensive and/or inappropriate during the event ? Because this is the only thing I am hearing about . Also, when someone sneezes, they often issue an apology or ask to be excused to those around them or in the immediate vacinity . Are sneezes involuntary ?
