  1. Hard to reconcile the n-word being yelled at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo.

  2. Seeing the comments here are brutal. What really pisses me off is how much we’ve sanitized the disability conversation to the point where the public mostly sees conventionally attractive, often white, low-support-needs people as the face of it, and then everyone forgets that many disabilities are actually disruptive and debilitating by definition. I feel awful for everyone involved in what happened, but Tourette’s is not some obscure mystery condition. It would take two minutes on Google to learn that involuntarily shouting the most inappropriate, shocking things imaginable is a well-known symptom. People are acting like this is a moral failing instead of a neurological disorder, and that’s just sad all around.

Sorry, but maybe some forms of „inclusivity“ shouldn’t be encouraged, as in this case, when the likelihood of the person with Tourettes seriously offending someone with the invectives they have no way of controlling. I understand they can’t control what comes out of their mouth, but that doesn’t mean anyone should have to be confronted with it in a public situation like this.

I think there was a situation some years ago with a Starbucks barista who had Tourettes and customers complained to management about it. I think Starbucks tried to move her to a different position that didn’t deal directly with the public, she got upset, sued and won. Tough situation for all, but, frankly, I wouldn’t want to get cursed at while getting my morning coffee…

Appalled by those comments on Twitter essentially telling people with Tourette’s to stay a home if they can’t behave. So much for diversity and inclusion.

ETA: I’m sorry for everyone involved. I’m sure there are racists taking advantage of the situation to be awful to black people, but that’s not Davidson’s fault. We’re talking about the man who hurled abuse and death threats at the Queen as he collected his MBE. You’d think people would be more understanding.

What has bothered me in this whole conversation is no one is putting blame on the actual event organizers for not seeming to put in a lick of planning in how to accommodate this whole situation.

There are dozens of advocacy organizations I am sure would have been glad to help assist them in planning . I’m not an expert in this specific area, but I do know there are tons of people living with this disorder daily who go to work and school. So it stands to reason there are best practices for an event like this.

  6. I was wondering why it sounded like someone was heckling during the Paddington Bear video!

I have a form of it, athough for the most part I lost my vocal tics after puberty. All I have now are the motor ones. Its like having an itch inside your body, a very very very difficult to ignore itch. Its especially annoying when your emotions are running high or if you think about them.

I wish they just gave him a private room. I know that it would seem like they’re just tucking away a disabled person but that’s probably the only way for him to have a safe and enjoyable night.

Like, knowing his form of Tourette’s, it’s pretty obvious that, at some point, he’d be shouting slurs on live TV. So putting him there with just a warning to the audience is just setting him up to have a horrible night.

  9. That answers my question and annoyance about who the F was yelling during the show

Oh, he didn’t shout „strong language“. It was something else entirely!

In the movie and life I suppoze John Davidson was diagnosed at 25. I was diagnosed at 24. I once had to explain to a police chief after being detained at 18 when I didn’t even know I had Tourettes yet that I was not planning on doing a school shooting simply because I had an outburst (at the time I thought it was due to stress.). Anyone who has what John has or similar, has had to deal with the same thing. Only it stays with them every single fucking day.

Quite frankly the reaction to this has hardened my resolve to stop caring what others think. If you can tell people what happened, why it happened, and even then they refuse to understand you can just disregard them. As a person and their opinions. You cannot draw blood from a stone. It cannot be done. Attempting so is madness.

I have Tourette’s. Tics suck. Trying to hold one in is like trying to stop a sneeze, cough or a yawn; they can maybe be controlled for a short time but trying to that generally makes the tic worse (plus it’s uncomfortable).

My opinion is that I will be interested to see if the organizers of the event partnered with any Tourette’s advocacy groups in an attempt to come up with a solution to mitigate a situation like this. I’m not sure if there even is a solution; I’ve never been invited to something like this but I can honestly say that I personally probably would not attend.

This whole situation is bringing a lot of negative attention to a condition that is already pretty widely misunderstood.

I have Tourette’s with verbal tics. I’m fortunate that mine aren’t profane. Though they can be concerning “I want to kill myself” is one of my most common tics. I feel for Mr. Davidson. That being said, accommodations could have been made. Have him sit backstage and watch the show on a feed or something. I understand that my tics aren’t my fault, but they can make people uncomfortable. I’m sure he does too. If he knew one of his tics was shouting horrible obscenities he should be willing to accept that he needs special accommodations and have the decency to ask for them. If this particular word is a new tic then maybe we need to examine why it emerged now? My tics have changes spontaneously over my life, but this just seems too convenient.

Racial slurs aren’t ticks. Being racist is a deep seeded feeling regardless of condition.
