The flag of the Knights of the Order of Malta (so, the Knights of St John) or the Maltese Cross. Still in use by the order today (it still exists, although the function is humanitarian). It dates back to the 11th century, where in fact it was used by the Knights Templar… although these are different knights. It seems like the very original one belonged to the Republic of Amalfi (which had a blue background), which today is part of Italy. It’s now widely used in Malta as a national symbol due to the deep history of the ruling of the Knights in Malta of course. I don’t think there’s any reason for it having a black or red background, although it seems that the one used by the knights during crusades had a black background. In fact if you visit the St John’s Cathedral in Valletta, which was built by the knights themselves, you can see the crosses on red backgrounds for example.
Is which country is this? If it’s in Canada, there are a lot of Maltese migrants, so that might be related.
