There is a huge difference between „Job candidates required to describe how they would advance “decolonization.” A video that suggests starting meetings by identifying oneself as a “settler” on unceded native lands. A political scientist who says he was instructed to teach game theory “from an Indigenous perspective.”“
and what the article claims to be „The case underscores how Trump-era opposition to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts has spread north to Canada. “
this has nothing to do with Trump-era opposition to diversity. These professors are not making wild accusations about DEI, they’re pointing out the very serious harm of „The professors who petitioned the court say the university’s measures promote a campus culture that punishes contrarian ideas and pressures academics to endorse progressive political positions with which they may disagree. “
Universities are not safe spaces, they aren’t supposed to be. They are places of learning where your world views and beliefs are expected to be challenged in a respectable manner. The minute they become safe spaces, they lose their value as a learning environment because if all you ever hear is things that agree with your view point, you are not learning and growing.

I can’t help but think that the BC Supreme Court will side with UBC here. The Land Acknowledgement thing in particular seems like a slam dunk for UBC, since they can argue that it’s not “political” by virtue of the land acknowledgements being descriptions of basic facts.

Probably this will turn into nothing in the courts, but their whinge is likely more about creating a media-splash stepping stone to new careers as right wing grifters for these professors than it is about academic freedom.
Conservatives will be lining up to throw money at these professors.

In a sane world, none of this would be considered “political”. It’s like saying that acknowledging climate change is political – not in reality, but those on the right are making it political
