Budget gets its balls kicked in by reliance on royalties from an oversupplied commodity.
Blame immigrants.
This only works with conservative voters. Theyre always looking for the next outgroup to blame.

What kind of yahoo do you need to be to think you can ask at the provincial level for changes to Canada’s Constitution? That’s why we have federal political parties.
Also, with 9 questions, is she trying to combine 9 referendums into one?

I’m wondering if this broadcast is a message to Ottawa saying ‘we want what Quebec already has’.
Could this be the precursor to a constitutional challenge down the road ?

Considering that a QUARTER of Albertans are immigrants, it’s a bit idiotic to blame them while also consistently complain that Ontario and Quebec are „favored“ because of their bigger population.
So which one is it Smith?

Holy overreach batman
Is that substantiative enough for a comment?
I don’t live in her province and I’m so sick of her trying to performatively overreach into federal jurisdiction.

>“The fact is, Alberta taxpayers can no longer be asked to continue to subsidize the entire country through equalization and federal transfers…
Alberta’s Law: those who whine about equalization always demonstrate they have no idea how it works.
>…permit the federal government to flood our borders with new arrivals, and then give free access to our most-generous-in-the-country social programs to anyone who moves here,” Smith said.
You literally ran „Alberta is calling“ ads in the Toronto subway during the peak immigration years. Lie in the bed you’ve made.

The referendum stuff is Smith’s attempt to channel the separatist grievances into support for her via the referendum, instead of the independence petition. The independence stuff is a political landmine for her, so she’s offering separatist/separatist-leaning people „practical“ solutions for their grievances – instead of the constantly shifting definitions of „independence.“
Importantly, there’s an election on the horizon – it has to occur before the end of October 2027.

Is this not just a roundabout way of Smith blaming immigrants for the “large deficit” that Alberta is set to unveil?
Do immigrants control the oil markets?

Oh, she said the „I“ word. That crowd over at the main Canadian sub is going to love her even more than they do already.

Surprised no one has mentioned that this will also likely correspond with an early election date. UCP is up in the polls, oil and gas will likely do well this year due to war in the middle east, and it also allows Smith to kick the separation referendum can down the road.

They were the ones with the Alberta is calling ads and now they’re anti immigration. Anyway why shouldn’t temporary workers be eligible for health care if they’re working and paying income taxes?

So what happens to a potential alberta independence referendum vote now? No way can it happen this year if the petition succeeds because I don’t think she can hold it at the same time as this referendum.

Let’s remind the UCP about their $150M healthcare screw up and corruption among those close to the party for overbilling for the lease of buildings etc.

Whether this happens in the fall is irrelevant, this helps stoke the engine of discontent and disaffection among Albertans who reach the critical 180k signatures for the separation referendum. The separatists need those undecided to be angry enough to irrationally react and sign the petition.

Between 2022 and 2023 Alberta ran the „Alberta Is Calling“ campaign. In 2024 Danielle Smith sent a letter to Justin Trudeau asking for more immigrants. In 2025 Danielle Smith tried to bring in immigrant workers from the UAE.
This referendum is a farce.
