It would be nice if I could see the names listed next to the etymology.

Artemis, 11:30 AM, February 24th. Entering the province of Kerkyra, five miles south of the Albanian border, twelve miles west of the coast. I’ve never seen so many trees in my life.

  3. For those asking about Crete: it was occupied by Arabs in the 9th-10th century, and even though the city of *Al-Kan* („Inn“) was on the site of the old settlement of Cydonia, the Arabic name became Hellenized after the Byzantine reconquest in 961 into *Chania*, which it remains today.

They also formed the city of *Al-Handak* („The Moat“, after the defensive enclosure first established on their landing) at the site where the ancient port of Heraklion was, and after the Byzantine reconquest was Hellenized into *Chandax.* The Venetians took over after the 4th Crusade in 1204 and the city was Italianized into *Chandia*. During the Ottoman Empire, it was Turkified into *Kandiye*, but after Cretan independence in the late 19th Century they revived the antique name *Heraklion*.
