      >MP Matt Jeneroux, elected for the Conservative party in the Edmonton Riverbend riding, is leaving his party to join the Liberals.

      >Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed this latest defection to his party in a post on X.

    2. Does this bring the Liberals up to a majority **if** they win the by-elections? Terrebonne will probably be tough.

    3. loading_name on

Holy shit. Well guess all eyes on Terrebonne to see if they get a majority. Doubt the libs will lose seats in the Toronto by-elections.

    4. Didn’t he just announce he was resigning a few months ago? Is that still happening? Regardless, shit storm incoming

    5. flatulentbaboon on

How does this not blackpill conservatives in Alberta who already feel their vote is not worth a lot?

    6. BloodJunkie on

i can’t blame him at all. the conservatives just affirmed that they are not willing to clean up their house

    7. Professional-Cry8310 on

Apparently Carney is just a legendary politician. How does he keep swaying members over? Wow

    8. Tough job market out there he probably changed his mind on resigning after handing out a few resumes and decided to stay employed.

    9. I mean no one will admit but I can imagine these conversations involve horsetrading and incentives.

„Join us u can be in cabinet “ or some other sweetheart deals

People will say that dont happen…

      But..

I have doubt they are driven purely by ideology imo cause a lot of these same mps spent years blasting the liberals as bad.

    10. Honestly not surprised after the Conservatives booed their own MP the other day.

    11. LordPiraveen on

Wow! C’est du n’importe quoi. Genre les ministres fédéraux changent de côté comme si ce n’était rien.

I want nothing more than for none of the current parties in Canada to have a majority.

    13. Few-Character7932 on

So he was resigning only then to turn around and cross the floor anyways? Are people not tired of how unethical our politicians are?

If Carney wants a majority why not just call an election. They’re polling in majority territory anyways

    14. This is so unfair to his constituents. The conservatives didn’t just win a plurality in his riding. He won majority as a conservative!! I don’t want to ban floor crossing since it gives MPs a little bit of autonomy in a system where they don’t really have much, but I still hate it.

Edit: But maybe it is better for Canada to have a majority government going into CPTPP trade negotiations with the EU and the CUSMA review with the US and Mexico. All eyes will be on Terrebonne now.

    15. Conservative Leadership confirming that this is indeed what they wanted: giving the Liberals an even bigger win because they can’t control their own party or moderate even themselves to be productive in the house as opposition.

Majority governments are ridiculous and how this next one’s come about is even more absurd.

    16. stephenBB81 on

I really hoped that the Liberals wouldn’t be able to secure a Majority so that they still had to make sure they had some support from other parties.

I hate when governments in Canada have a majority, I like when they are close because they can move things with tweaks but still need to get others on board.

    17. Well this is fucking wild.

I remember the experts being very confused that Jeneroux only „resigned“ because he was the name that was floating around for an aisle crossing. Obviously, there were rumours that he was threatened in some way by the CPC and that’s why he „resigned“ instead of flipped.

      Welp.

    18. Mirin_Gains on

50.2% PC and 44.8% Liberal vote in his riding. The PC actually voted in a true majority to have someone cross the floor.

So PC signals they will work with Liberals. Liberals refuse to budge and now someone crosses the floor.

Sorry guys I think it stinks.

    19. Bytowneboy2 on

Reminder, you vote for individuals not parties. Get to know your local candidates.

    20. Everyone who doesn’t believe conversations and back room deals don’t facilitate these floor crossings is being naive.

    21. ShadowRaiders on

Objectively this is bad. Reality is neither party is interested in passing legislation to make this illegal.

You should be forced to resign and run a by election.

    22. Long_Ad_2764 on

I understand this so allowed but it shouldn’t be. If people from his riding wanted a conservative candidate they would have voted one in.

    23. The Conservatives can never breath.

Every single time a crossing happens it’s preceded by pundits and news folks saying „I think the floor crossings are over and the Conservatives are in the clear“

    24. GregariousK on

Members of Parliament are supposed to represent their constituents interests, not those of their party.

For those who haven’t heard of him and wonder where he stands on issues:

      * He voted in favour of extending bereavement leave.
      * He wants more housing supply, build more houses messaging
      * He uses tough on crime messaging.
      * he spoke out against the overturning of roe vs wade, said abortion should remain legal and safe
      * he voted no on C-233, a conservative sex-selective abortion bill, he considers debate around abortion “closed”
      * he voted yes for bill C-6, a bill to ban conversion therapy
      * he spoke out against the emergencies act and voted against it
      * he spoke out in favour of availability of vaccines and spoke out against forced vaccines
      * he later criticized the ability of the government to roll out vaccines fast enough, expected vaccines to roll out faster

Just realized there no legislation yet for recalling an MP.

If voters are displeased and don’t feel their elected representative is representing their values they should have that as an option available to them.

    27. anacondatmz on

As someone who voted Liberal in the most recent election, I feel like them having a minority is better for Canada. Helps keep things a little more honest.

    28. i’m not well versed politically, how does this even work? cons and libs have fundamentally different values that’s kind of the point. so did his fundamental values also change overnight?

    29. How does our democratic representation work? I listen to Party A & Party B’s proposals for how to run the country. I give my input by voting for Party A. „I like the Party A plan.“ A majority of my neighbours in my riding agree and Party A wins that riding.

Then our Party A politician defects to Party B. Where did my democratic input just go? Was it meaningless? What mechanism am I supposed to use as a voter to influence government policy if my vote can be effectively nullified by someone’s whim? This strikes me as deeply antidemocratic.

    30. I propose we remove all party labels from election ballots to make it abundantly clear its about they people and not the party.

    31. Comfortable-Yak-5080 on

That is a dumb move. Either resign or cross the floor don’t do this BS!

    32. InternationalTea3417 on

I don’t respect this. Matt said he was resigning. He put that in writing. Now he’s floor crossing to the Liberals? Why do the words of politicians so often mean nothing?
