This is what I want out of the deal as well. Something like 80% to 90% of the work in EV factories in China is done by robots now.
That Oppo factory tour is crazy. They are even using robot movers to move the supplies from one area to another, at the 19:08 mark of the video.
It’s stuff like this that I hope Canada can learn from, because I think within 10 years, it will go from 80% to 90% of robots doing the work, to 95% to 99% of the robots doing the work.

I’m not currently in a market for an EV..
But if I was Tesla is out for numerous reasons.. And reasonably price, mid size cars are not exactly what’s offered in our market today.. Everything is basically giant shite-box SUV shape waste of space and expensive as hell.
I’m not sure what models they’ll be bringing in, but any of them are normal cars, it might be tempting.
Thought I’ll personally wait a few years to see what they do in terms of establishing supply and maintenance networks. That’s the one benefit of buying from established brands, that I don’t think the Chinese EV makers will have right away. And I personally am not going to give them any money for a car that I can’t get worked on, or the companies pull out in a few years from the market.

Why would someone not buy the cheaper thing that is of same or better quality?
Only reason not would be racism.
And don’t even bring up concerns with spying etc…yeah I’m sure Musk isn’t creeping on you.

Genuine question cause I have no idea. Are the Chinese EVs even good?
No_Beautiful_2779 on
At this stage of my life, I am no longer driven by political interests, but solely by what has the least impact on my finances. That being said, if a Chinese EV is cheaper than one from the USA, I will buy the Chinese one. And if there were Mexican EVs cheaper than the Chinese ones, I would buy Mexican. I am far too poor to be fastidious.
Salt-Walk-17 on
Australian here, we have had BYDS for quite a long time. It has eaten up the car market like skittles. Chinese cars are just like regular cars now and went through the phases of ‘Chinese cars’ being low quality trash to them being literally everywhere in our everyday life. I’am honestly surprised so many markets don’t have these cars.

I wish we would just rip the bandaid off and import more than 40,000 of them a year. Because if the demand is as high as it seems, and the supply is that low, the final price on these things is not going to be cheap enough to get this in everyday Canadian’s driveways.

As they should.

While you’re at it, bring also Chinese ICE powered cars to Canada.

The only thing I’m concerned about is the pricing will go up due to demand, this is Canada after all and we can’t seem to have nice things for reasonable pricing.

China meddling in our elections. Sweep it under the rug. Secret Chinese police stations. Sweep it under the rug. Trump says stupid stuff. Cut all ties and boycott America. Don’t worry though. China is the good guy and will not have another avenue of spying on us with their technology in these EVs. Lmao. Trust me bro.

I feel like I don’t have much choice but to buy European or Asian cars. The North American manufacturers have lost interest in building smaller, efficient cars.
SnoutStreak on
I’m good on this, but how can we just quickly bring in 49k EV’s that are new to us? I mean, do they not have to pass fairly strict standards, and does that not take a good bit of time to cover? Or are we using Australia’s findings to certify?

The comments on here would make you believe BYD is superior to Toyota in reliability. CCP boasting just to give the finger to Trump is quite sad.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about these EVs from the obvious reddit Lpc/ccp bots and propagandists lol! Apparently they will be basically giving these semi autonomous rolling surveillance and national security threats away for free too!

Yeah,
I highly doubt most non-Chinese Canadians will.
EVs are not known for their cold weather sustainability.
I agree most vehicles from companies based in the states have become pretty low quality as they move their production to cheaper countries.
That being said their are more reliable and cost efficient vehicles from other countries out there that are not EVs and have good track records.
Demetre19864 on
Of course we will.
Canadians have been subject to the auto industry having. Their will imposed on us with zero lemon laws and exuberant prices .
100k for a truck.
50-75k for a low end hybrid?
It’s insanity.
American auto industry chose greed over and over again then decided to elect a president that embodies that and broke every trade agreement.
Yea , for years we chose supporting Canadian/American at the expense of our wallets.
Instead they took that good will and did the standard corporate rule of shareholders over customer.
Maybe a new player will emerge , but doubtful.

The American (and honestly Japanese) brands need this competition. Their prices have gotten out of control. If they want to compete they need to figure out how to make their product affordable.

Who will service new cheap Chinese EVs? I wouldn’t want to be an early adopter. The China trade deal opens the door to cheaper options, but geopolitics like US influence could disrupt it again and end that market altogether.

Batteries are undergoing rapid development and solid-state batteries are just nearing the market. It’s nice we’re finally getting those tariffs lifted, and forcing competition instead of stagnating on what traditionally worked, but this feels like the classic example of a company selling its prototype to fund its actual finalized product. If you buy an import EV good for you, but maybe it’s best to hold off a couple of years.

I just read all the comments and nobody realized that you aren’t getting an affordable Chinese vehicle out of this deal. The cars that are going to be coming in are the Volvo, Tesla, Buick, Cadillac, Polestar and so on. These cars are going to be sold at a premium in an already established market. This isn’t about affordability, it’s about profit.
The only option that comes to mind for me would be to import your own Chinese vehicle. Getting it certified may be impossible, but the manufacturer might help.

Price is the big point – cars have become crazy expensive over the years.
Though the change in sentiment cited would be because our old trading partner keeps twisting that blade, and our collective back is getting a bit tender from it.
