They don’t teach Inuktitut in schools, all Inuktitut language is erased from signage and goods, and announcements from the government aren’t made in Inuktitut. According to western politicians and msm is a genocide and you are not allowed to deny it.
They should start a YouTube channel and teach it there so anyone that is interested can know and the language doesn’t have to die with the few people that know it.
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon at all, and 24hr worldwide communication will only accelerate the demise of indigenous languages.
That’s sad for the older generations and abstractly sad in a linguistic sense. I get it though, I wouldn’t continue to speak a language that wasn’t relevant to me, so I don’t blame the kids.
I’m a video game developer at a reasonably large studio. I have a dream that someday we will get a grant from the government to translate our games into indigenous languages. The money would mostly go to the tribes, where they would develop a team of translators that can do voice over work. Ideally that would lead to movies and tv translations as well. I have started putting out feelers, but there is a very long way to go still.
I think the best way to get young people interested in their native language is to make it fun. It has to be in the shows/games they watch. That hopefully leads to them making their own online communities to share their language as well.
It’s happening to my native minor language as well, but kids are growing up trilingual now, Frisian, Dutch and English. I have a cousin who can switch between the three as well as I can. Difference is I grew up bilingual Frisian/Dutch and lived in the UK for most my adult life. He’s 11…
My families scottish, irish, german, and italian, the only language we speak is english.
