Those kind of prices will result in a generation of lifelong renters. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Canada shows consequences of NIMBY liberals running a whole country. High RE prices, high rent, high tax. low wage, los of free riders.

  3. Price per square foot would be more informative. For example it might be a bit surprising to see NY (where you would expect things to be quite expensive) in red, but the average new home in Ontario is currently about 2400 sqft, but in NY state it’s about 1600 sqft. Heck even Texas seems to have smaller average home size than Ontario.

A quick google shows the cost per sqft being similar in NYS and Ontario, but with NYC being in the vicinity of 50% higher than Toronto (mostly due to Manhattan being insanely expensive)

Does that mean prices in Ontario aren’t outrageous? Nope. Just means this map isn’t the full picture.

  4. Yeah but what lunatic would want to live in any of those states over Ontario? You’re paying more in other ways.

The minimum wage in Canada is also about $6 more when you factor in the currency difference.

A 2br 1bath rancher in my town, in jersey is AT LEAST 500K. Apartments are going for 280k+

  7. Yeah, I live in a grey state…and of course still pay $1k a month for my employer-sponsored health insurance that has a $3k/yr annual out-of-pocket minimum.

  8. Seems like most Western countries have at least one area of the country the rich like to live and price others out.

How can anyone in Ontario afford to own when median income is also lower than in all 50 states? Is supply just extremely low?

  10. What is the average home price in Ontario when you take the GTA out of the equation?
