    1. Possibly, if there is a real kill switch. The most realistic „kill switch“ are spare parts.

    2. It’s not so much if you can do it or not, it’s that if you do it and they stop sending you parts and software updates, what do you do?

That is hardly news, and the Americans know this as well. Any piece of hardware running on silicon chips can be hacked. Supercool the circuit board and map the transistors change its state one at a time. The issue is not that we cannot do this but rather that we don’t want our fleet grounded in the meantime. This is the true vulnerability.

*Outgoing Dutch Defence Secretary Tuinman: If the US blocks F-35 software updates, we will crack the code and do our own updates to make the plane fully European. I’m not allowed to say more.*

Fascinating stuff happening behind the scenes currently..

    5. „After discovering this, the unsigned app ‚Angry Big Titty Birds‘ was found on more than a dozen F-35s.“

    6. What I don’t understand is why they wouldn’t have demanded the source code be placed in escrow as part of the contract so that they can do their own updates if the US blocks them.

    7. well you reverse engineer the software, don’t you? Same PC but Linux instead of Windows.

    8. That gonna piss off US military industrial complex. Just hope they didn’t hidden anything in the silicon itself that can brick the the plane,

What’s the veiled meaning being this part of the same tweet „we’ll see whether the Americans will show their true colors.”

Im pretty sure our military can just hit a few buttons from the command center and brick everyone of the F-35s we have ever sold.

    11. Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak that we’re talking about? /s

I’ll just use this USB key I found on the ground outside of the airbase. It’s labeled “F 35 jailbreak“

It’s pretty from reading the amount of contradicting comments here that the vast majority of you commenters don’t know what you’re talking about and wanted to jump into another thread to release your America hate.

I need to sideload netflix to my cockpit screen for those long missions

    15. It’s important to understand he’s not talking about the software and firmware running on the F-35’s on-board systems, but support software that handles maintenance and configuration of the jet (ODIN) and other software that’s used to create the MDF file which contains combat-focused information.

ODIN is cloud based so can’t be ‚jailbroken‘ as such, but it’s probably not too hard to duplicate the main functionality of the system using entirely new code. That would just take time and money.

The software used to build the MDF file is very restricted, even the UK can’t do that on its own. The information is sent to British personnel operating at a secure facility in the US, who can use the software there but no copy ever leaves the US.

But knowing the quality of code produced most defence contractors, I’d bet real money a team of talented reverse-engineering specialists could document the format of the file fairly quickly and enable the creation of at least a bare-bones package capable of creating new files.

Actually getting enough parts to keep the planes in the air is another matter, but the US would also have that issue if there was a full breakdown in relations.

    16. Not sure why such statements are useful. If true, then good, we’ll jailbreak it if we have to. But what’s the point?

    17. You can’t tell me this work hasn’t been started on ages ago, specifically back in 2016.

Just because you can unlock the code for changes doesn’t mean that you know what you’re doing, that you should do it; hack a $20 Bluetooth speaker and brick it, you’re out $20.

Brick a F-35A and that’s $80M of hardware and possibly a dead pilot.
